Historic Dubai

Explore Old Dubai

Take a trip back in time at the Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood, the old part of the city where you can get an insight into culture, history and traditions from days gone by. Wander along the narrow maze-like alleys, visit quaint art galleries and marvel at beautiful old architecture, delightful sand-coloured homes and traditional wind towers. A captivating guided tour is a great way to explore the area’s key attractions. Dubai Museum, in Al Fahidi Fortress, is definitely worth a visit, with ancient artefacts, old weapons, former fishing boats and amazing archaeological remains among the attractions. The Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Centre for Cultural Understanding (SMCCU) is a wonderful place to delve into the area’s culture, while sailing Dubai Creek in a traditional dhow offers a unique perspective of Dubai’s most historic quarter.

Authentic Dubai Cuisine

Discover Authentic Cuisine

Dubai boasts an exceptional international food scene, but it’s also home to incredible local cuisine in a myriad of street food outlets, cafes, restaurants and souks. Hummus, shawarma, freshly-grilled meats and fish, fragrant curries and falafel are among the much-loved staples of Arabic cuisine. Machboos, which features lamb, chicken or seafood prepared with rice, is considered the national dish, Thareed is a hearty meat stew and Al Harees is a porridge-like favourite. Old Dubai features many traditional Arabic eateries where you can try delicious local food and drinks, including the Arabian Tea House and Restaurant, the first authentic Emirati restaurant in Dubai. You'll discover other excellent food spots for traditional fare in the historic neighbourhoods of Bur Dubai, Deira and Satwa, while the Local House restaurant is the place to try Emirati cuisine with a modern twist, including exotic camel burgers.

Local Dubai Crafts

Embrace Local Handicrafts

Marvel at inspiring exhibitions, take your pick of handcrafted souvenirs, and immerse yourself in the vibrancy of Dubai’s colourful art scene. Discover the passionate work and talented abilities of local artisans at quaint boutiques in Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood, or head to Alserkal Avenue for a modern art gallery experience. From metal working and weaving to pottery and painting, Dubai’s creative flare is laced throughout the entire city. The Arabic alphabet is another great example of the UAE’s decorative techniques, with artistic calligraphy used to make unique patterns. The beautiful designs of henna body art were historically worn by brides in order to bring luck to their marriage, but now stands as a popular beauty treatment in Dubai today. Explore the aromatic fragrances of the Arab world at Al Shindagha Museum and learn about the traditional weaving techniques of Al Sadu and Talli.

Local shopping Dubai

Shop Like A Local

Offering everything from clothing and jewellery to handicrafts and spices, Dubai’s souks are great places to experience an authentic slice of life and snap up a bargain in the process. If you’re seeking a dazzling gift for that special someone, the Gold Souk, in Deira, is the place to go, while a world of colour and aromas can be found nearby at the Spice Souk. More intoxicating fragrances await at Deira’s Perfume Souk, fashion and fabrics can be found at the Textile Souk in Bur Dubai, and souvenirs galore picked up at Naif Souk, one of the oldest in the city. For a modern take on Dubai’s souks, head to The Souk at Dubai Mall or Souk Al Marfa on Dubai Islands. Alternatively, a shopping trip to the Al Seef neighbourhood offers a mix of traditional stalls and modern stores.

Dubai Bedouin

Live Like A Bedouin

No visit to Dubai would be complete without a venture into the desert where you can live like a Bedouin among the vast sand dunes. Groups of friends and families can take a break from the theme parks and big city thrills, and enjoy the wonders awaiting in the emirate’s enchanting wilderness. Set out on a camel ride across the sands, take to a hot air balloon for a bird’s eye view of the desert or enjoy a breathtaking stargazing session when the sun goes down. A magical night under canvas in an authentic Bedouin camp is among the phenomenal outdoor experiences and activities in this spellbinding destination. This is a great opportunity for romantic couples to tuck into a traditional meal and spend intimate hours under the stars. Camp activities can also include henna painting and traditional live Arabic entertainment.

BestTimeToVisit

Best Time To Visit

An average of 8 to 10 hours of daily sunshine makes Dubai the ideal destination for getting out and about to discover the emirate’s incredible attractions. A mere 68mm of rain is experienced annually so an umbrella will be a rare sighting, unless it’s being used as a sunshade. Glorious year-round sunshine means this incredible Arabian Gulf getaway is a great choice for a winter sun holiday, offering the chance to escape the cold weather and dark nights back in the UK. The peak season is from November to April, when temperatures average around 25°C, which is ideal for exploring the major city attractions and setting off for a desert adventure. Temperatures rise from May to October in Dubai to around 30°C, and can average 40°C in the middle of summer. Thankfully, the city’s restaurants, shopping malls and main indoor attractions have superb air conditioning systems to keep you cool, even on the hottest days.
