Oman is a thrill seeker’s paradise. The towering Jebel Akhdar and Jebel Shams in the Al Hajar mountain range are jaw-dropping spectacles that are definitely worth a visit, while Wadi Damm is a beautiful valley featuring amazing rock formations. Bimmah Sinkhole is a popular natural attraction where you can swim in the turquoise waters and Rub’ al-Khali (Empty Quarter) in western Oman, the largest continuous sand desert in the world, will take your breath away. An imposing natural reserve for green turtles can be found in Ras Al Jinz, in the Ash Sharqiyah Region, home to some of Oman's most striking coastlines. Other amazing wonders include Snake Gorge, home to the country’s largest natural water park, the giant baobab trees near the coastal city of Salalah and the menacing stalactites in Al Hoota Cave at the foot of Jebel Shams.

Barter for a bargain in Muttrah Souk, gaze in awe at Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, peruse the artefacts in the National Museum Oman and tuck into traditional Omani dishes including Shuwa, Majboos and Mashuai. Must-see landmarks include Nakhal Fort, Nizwa Fort, Jibreen Castle and Al Hazm Fort, while the quaint village of Bat is home to an array of incredible beehive tombs from the Bronze Age. Guided tours to observe the lives of fishermen, ship-builders and pottery workers offer an enlightening view of traditional life from yesteryear.

Other options for a chilled out time include a trip to the remote Musandam Peninsula where mighty limestone mountains drop to the turquoise sea, trekking in the Omani Grand Canyon (Wadi Ghul) and strolls along Muscat’s 3km Corniche.

Oman has a glorious climate all year round, with October and April being a great time to visit when the temperature is a pleasant 17°C to 35°C. June is the warmest month, with the capital Muscat getting an average temperature of 35°C and around 13 hours of daily sunshine. This is an ideal time for a relaxing beach holiday, lazing in the sands and enjoying an average sea temperature of 30°C. January is the coolest month when the mercury falls to around 21°C. Oman's wettest month is February when an average of 30mm of rain is experienced, normally falling as fleeting short showers. The south coast area of Salalah has a monsoon season from June to September, known as the Khareef, when wet winds create a humid and thick fog.
