This hotel is what you make of it! For what we paid we are happy with our experience.
I understand the people saying it is “outdated” (we are staying in an updated Superior room), however, the service we have received this far and the cleanliness of the room and the hotel is exceptional! I’m not a person who is hard to satisfy, I understand that you get what you pay for, and for the price my partner and I paid we couldn’t be happier.
-AC in the room
-Friendly, approachable staff (of whom went above and beyond to accommodate my father, who injured himself prior to the flight, out ended up needing to hire a mobility scooter, the staff were unaware at time of arrival of this, allowed him to store and charge his scooter in a secure place as it couldn’t fit in the lift to his room)
-Early check-in upon arrival with no extra charge
-No noise issues at night time
-Perfect location for local amenities
-Inexpensive
I had read some of the reviews prior to the visit and I was in two minds but I’m so glad I came to see for myself, as my personal experience this far has been top notch, but that’s not to downplay anyone else’s, this is just my own opinion. For under £1000 I couldn’t really ask for much else.

We just had 9 days at Rey Carlos. Accept the hotel has some rooms that need a little updating but even with that our room was in very good condition and absolutely spotlessly clean and was (like all their rooms) an entire one bed spacious apartment with kitchenette, lounge and very good size balcony. For the price including breakfast for two weeks we found Rey Carlos unbeatable value for money. Location is very convenient for beaches and transport as well as restaurants. Lovely spotless large swimming pool for windy days. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Staff were truly superbly friendly and helpful in English and with most guests being German staff seem multilingually competent. Don't expect 5 star standard and you should be pleasantly surprised.

You get what you pay for . Rooms good size , beds ok although hard to please everyone here. Older gentleman on reception was great . Breakfast was Luke warm at very best . Cold fried eggs and sasuages at opening time . Raised this after the 2nd day but nothing changed. Rooms cleaned well by maids. Towels sparse at times and were well used. Location good for Jumbo centre. Wouldn’t return here.

AVOID THIS HOTEL! Horrible service, didn’t even allow me to refill a bottle of water to take away from the buffet. The responsible lady at the restaurant was very disrispectful, as well as the waiter. Rooms are extremely outdated, shower leaks and doesn’t keep the temperature, refrigerator was noisy the entire night and the location of the room is on the aisle side to the elevator, with special mention of the music being played by the neighors on the other side of the street. Really don’t recommend.

Well, depending on if you are really not worried about the cleanliness of the room and you really don't mind basic...and when I say basic..I mean probably not even basic! If you are self-catering, please don't expect to be cooking anything as it would be pretty difficult depending on what room you've been given. Our room had a fridge..4 rings, 3 knives, forks and spoons, 3 plates, 2 tiny cups, and one very small saucepan. That's it. No kettle or oven. Although it was said that if you upgraded to a ' superior room, it had a very small oven....that doesn't have racks to put whatever it is you are trying to cook!
Despite what the advert says... there was no entertainment, no pool table, and no bar other than the one in the middle of the pool outside, which opened at 11 and shut at 5. However, on the same grounds of the hotel there is a very expensive restaurant which does have the odd entertainment..perhaps in the height of the season this may be regular. We tried it one night and we weren't impressed with the staff, food...the entertainment wasn't bad!
When we arrived at Hotel Rey Carlos it was 10pm. Extremely quiet, nobody around... not the buzzing atmosphere we were hoping for. The hotel clerk didn't seem very happy. After giving us 2 rooms which on entering the first, it was clear it hadn't been cleaned, with beds not being made and towels on the floor, we were then given a second room..sadly the same. By this time, it was 11pm, and we were extremely tired. He gave us a third room. All seemed well and tidy.
We immediately went for a walk to see if we could find a bar but alas very dead.
Back in the room, we unpacked and got into bed... It was then I noticed we had a fan in the room. I turned it on, and within seconds, the room was snowing with thick dust.... all over the beds, us and our clothes... we could only but laugh!
We slept well. On waking up and opening the curtains to sit on the terrace, we were in shock at the view...their was no views apart from a roof tops. Despite the advert saying, 'ALL' rooms had great views! This was clearly not the case.
The next day, we stayed around the pool. This was the ONLY thing we liked about the hotel. When the lady was on the bar, we had English music. She was fun, happy, and chatty. When the man was on the bar, the atmosphere dropped some. We ordered food from the bar, and it was ATROCIOUS! Absolutely diabolical, if that was the quality of the food ( thank goodness we were self catering) what on earth must the restaurant inside the hotel must be like.? Which incidentally, we never saw anyone enter!!
Apart from the hotel, we enjoyed the holiday. Free bus service to Puerto Rico. All night bus services back to hotel even at 3am! Yumbo centre is FANTASTIC!! Well worth a visit or 7! There are lots of things to book and see, eg, camel ride, 4x4 buggy off-road driving adventure ( this was the best 2½ hours of fantastic fun). Boat trips, snorking... so much to do.
Just the hotel let us down. But like I say, if it's just a room and you are not worried about anything else, then hopefully you would enjoy it.
