Guillermo Hernández y Silvia del Buffet Beach were welcoming and attentive - they get an absolute 6 out of 5 stars. They made our breakfast very delightful.
For the rest of the hotel, it should be disclosed that it is a tier setup. This is not an “All-Inclusive” in the way that we are used to experiencing. Once you arrive at the hotel there are premium upgrades that allow you to enjoy more of the basic amenities that are not offered with the original booking. It is a beautiful place with a large beach but just be prepared to pay for anything more than beach access and buffets. It is more aesthetics than experience/service focused.
The staff at the food centers (including restaurants) are all endearing and give great service. They alone make your stay better.

Loved our stay at Barcelo Maya Beach.
The great parts:
Ivan Uh and Carmen Ramirez at the breakfast buffet are AWESOME! The level of service they provide is great. Ask for them when you visit. Ivan knew us all by name. Cannot say enough good things about how welcome he made us feel.
Alberto at the dinner buffet was incredible too. Friendly and welcoming.
The room was clean and with damp rid and a fan from home is stayed pretty cool. Housekeeping was excellent. Oscar did a great job for us! They all work hard at this resort to keep things nice.
Beach is beautiful and pool is perfect. Grill at the beach has a wide selection of food, not sure how anyone would leave hungry.
Steakhouse was tasty and loved it. Tokyo Hibachi was good but small portions. Not allowed to ask for more or change up the meat options. Asked for a replacement appetizer and never got it. Would go there again but then to the buffet later to fill up.

The not so great parts:
Fridge in our room was not cold enough. We uses ice in our sink to cool down our bottled water.
Need more bar tenders at the pool bar. They are overloaded with people. Friendly but overloaded.
Chair saving at pool was a problem. Families could not find seats while many sat empty for the entire day with a single towel on them as a place holder.
Front desk wait was horrible. Need more staff there.
Guest services was good but getting into specialty restaurants was a task. Karina was very helpful but it took a few trips there to make it all happen (we had 3 reservations).
We would to go back. Many of the reviews are a bit extreme. Good food, good people working who want to assure excellent service.

Amazing place to stay! The beach is beautiful, service has been wonderful. The rooms are dated and could use a refresh but are very clean and clearly cared for. Aide Varguez was our server most of the trip at the pool bars, she was very kind and helpful always stopping to chat with a smile on her face. Aide definitely made our trip special and went above and beyond. Thank you Aide!

We had an amazing week here with family and friends for a wedding. The resort was gorgeous and well maintained. The grounds and beach were gorgeous! The pools were massive - there was a need for more chairs around the pools at the Beach resort though. The staff were amazing - so friendly and professional. We thoroughly enjoyed our vacation here!

You can summarize this place as, good installations, regular food and bad service. I asked for Tropical hotel, when I arrived i found out they moved me to Beach hotel. I asked for connected rooms, they didn’t have them ready until a day after. They did moved me, as a “favor” and until next day. They wanted me to charge me extra to “open the doors” (I guess you can imagine the kind of place this is). Some of the people are making their best effort to do a good job, but the culture here is not about service. I don’t think this place should be a 5-start resort, but I guess having your own arena or dolphinarium took it there, not necessarily service. I am still here for the rest of the week (already pay for it, so we would try to enjoy anyways) but would not recommend it
