Top 5 Things To Do On A Holiday In Malta

Malta Swimming

Step foot into a world of jaw-dropping coastlines, ancient wonders, and Mediterranean beauty on the captivating shores of Malta.

Tucked away in the azure waters just below Sicily and right of North Africa, the secluded archipelago consists of three islands - Malta, Gozo and Comino. Each offers something different, with opulent hotels, tasty cuisine, and 3,000 hours of sunshine every year among the delights that await. Whether you are searching for child-friendly beaches, adventurous cliffside hikes or romantic dinner spots, Malta has it all - and is just a 3-hour flight away from the UK! Experience the abundance of lively bars in Paceville, the historical landmarks of capital city Valletta, and, if you are a Game of Thrones fan, take a tour around some of the common filming locations. As it can be difficult to cram everything into just one visit, we’ve selected our top 5 things to do when on holiday in Malta.

Malta Culture

Embrace the Culture

Immerse yourself in Malta’s rich tapestry of culture, where hidden gems await those willing to explore beyond the tourist trail. Maybe take the chance to uncover the Megalithic Temples of Ħaġar Qim, Mnajdra, and Tarxien, unique UNESCO World Heritage Sites and the oldest stone architecture in the world. Another option is to embark on a hop-on-hop-off bus tour for the day, which includes a visit to the traditional fishing village of Marsaxlokk, where you can find medieval churches and red-washed buildings. Stroll along the historic streets of Mdina, Malta’s old capital city which holds a captivating 4,000-year-long history. Pay a visit to Malta’s current capital city, Valletta, for the perfect blend of traditional architecture and modern experiences. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is filled with historical landmarks such as the Upper Barrakka Gardens, a beautiful spot brimming with natural flora and overlooking the breathtaking Grand Harbour.

Malta Beach

Hit the Beach

When you have finished seeing the top sights, and the glorious sunshine and sparkling Mediterranean Sea become too tempting to resist, it’s time to head to one of Malta’s stunning beaches. The island’s quaint charm ensures that top swimming and sunbathing spots are always within reach, ranging from traditional sandy stretches to rugged rock pools. If you are looking for a family-friendly Blue Flag beach with shallow waters, Golden Bay is a popular choice in the north of the island, with water sports equipment and lifeguards on duty. Offering a kilometre-long stretch of pristine sands, Mellieħa Beach (also known as Għadira Bay) is Malta’s longest sandy beach and boasts plenty of child-friendly facilities. Beachgoers and couples craving a slice of peace and quiet can discover more secluded coves like St. Peter’s Pool, Imgiehabh Bay, or the slightly more well-known but equally awe-inspiring Paradise Bay.

Malta Kayak

Get Active

Adventure awaits around every corner, catering to both the adrenaline junkie and the leisurely explorer. Brimming with spectacular landscapes, Malta is a hiker’s paradise. From the more challenging route around Dingli Cliffs to easier walks like Girgenti Country Trail and the Żurrieq Loop. Alternatively, you could discover the Maltese scenery by hiring bicycles with your friends, family or partner, or opt for more fun on land with exhilarating go-karting or rock climbing to new heights. If you crave aquatic adventures, Malta is often named Europe’s number 1 scuba diving destination due to its crystal-clear Mediterranean waters and plethora of vibrant underwater wonders. You can also experience spectacular marine and plant life close to the shore with snorkelling equipment, embark on a day-long boat trip to uncover hidden gems, and enter a world of water sports such as kayaking, parasailing, kite surfing, and so much more.

Malta Cuisine

Eat like a Local

Indulge in the vibrant culinary scene of Malta, where every dish tells a story of the island’s rich heritage and diverse influences. Begin your gastronomic journey with a food walking tour around Valletta, where you can taste Maltese specialties like Ġbejna, Ħobż Malti, Imqaret, and much more. Enhance your culinary experience with a visit to artisan wineries, like Tal-Massar Winery in Gozo, where you can treat yourself to wine tastings with paired meats and cheeses - Maltese wines aren’t sold abroad so this is a real delicacy! Don’t miss the chance to learn the art of making traditional pastizzi, a popular savoury pastry which can be found in nearly every café and specialist pastizzerias. Walk along the coastal promenade from St. Julian’s to Sliema and stop off at quaint eating and drinking spots for tasty international bites and local beers along the way, enjoying the ocean views as you go.

Malta Activities

Discover the Sister Islands

Embark on a voyage of discovery to the islands of Gozo and Comino. For those who crave boat trips with an abundance of sunshine and turquoise waters, Comino is home to the Blue Lagoon, a sought-after setting that draws travellers from far and wide. The waters here are unbelievably clear, making it impossible to not jump in as soon as you catch a glimpse of them. The journey to the Blue Lagoon and Santa Maria caves, a top diving spot, is an experience in itself, with picture-perfect moments the whole way there. With its larger size, Gozo offers an authentic ambience of rustic archeological sites and a quieter atmosphere than mainland Malta, but still holds a sufficient amount of tourist-friendly facilities and activities to please all. A great way to experience the best of Gozo is with an open-top hop-on-hop-off bus tour, with stops at majestic temples and beautiful beaches.

If you’re craving a winter getaway, temperatures are still high enough to enjoy a beach holiday in October and November, averaging in the low to mid 20s.
