Experience the best that South Africa has to offer on an exhilarating Wildlife, Wine and Garden Route tour. Combining spellbinding landscapes, captivating local cultures and an unforgettable safari experience, this 5-night circular trip will take you on a journey of discovery that will be remembered forever. Setting off from the country’s legislative capital city, Cape Town, you’ll experience natural wonders in the Cango Caves and the Knysna Forests, then go in search of incredible wildlife on a ‘Big Five’ game drive in Albertina and spot whales from the shore in Hermanus. You’ll visit picturesque villages, where you’ll indulge in traditional delicacies and South Africa’s world-famous wine. From breathtaking nature to vibrant culture, there’s something for everyone to enjoy on this once-in-a-lifetime adventure.
You will begin your adventure at your hotel, where you’ll meet your tour representative before setting off for an area known as Little Karoo. The first stop on your journey will be at the scenic spa town of Montagu, where you’ll enjoy tea and scones at the Montagu Country Hotel, South Africa’s only original Art Deco hotel. You will then travel to Barrydale, where you will get the chance to visit a local farm school and gain an insight into community life from children and teachers (visit subject to school being open on day of tour). The next stop on your journey is the town of Calitzdorp, known for its fortified wines. You’ll get a chance to sample some of the local produce before travelling onwards to Oudtshoorn, which is famed for being the ostrich capital of the world. A local ostrich farm will be the venue for dinner, while you will also stay overnight in Oudtshoorn.

Following breakfast you’ll pay a visit to the sensational Cango Caves, taking in the awe-inspiring limestone caverns regarded as one of the world’s great natural wonders. On your return to Oudtshoorn, you’ll be treated to an interactive tour of an ostrich farm and get to enjoy a lunch of local specialities such as ostrich steak. You will then set off over the picturesque Outeniqua Pass towards the historic Garden Route town of George. You’ll make a stop at the ‘Map of Africa’ viewpoint, in Wilderness, where you’re sure to be captivated by the mesmerising natural scenery. Your day will end in Knysna, a location renowned for its oysters and set on the shores of a beautiful lagoon, where you will stay overnight.

After breakfast you’ll start the day with a visit to the Knysna Forests. A stop at the Forest Legends Museum will immerse you in tales of the areas enthralling past involving woodcutters, gold mining and elephants hunted to extinction. You will see the ‘Old Suzie’ steam engine used to carry logs and generate power, and visit the historic home of forester David Ernest Huchins, who led the way for the sustainable management of the indigenous forest. You’ll then get to enjoy a traditional lunch and local snacks at Totties Farm Kitchen, before visiting the Dalene Matthee Big Tree Memorial, an ancient yellowwood named as a tribute to author Dalene Matthee, who wrote four books on the Knysna Forests. After a fascinating day, you will stay overnight in Knysna.

Start the day with breakfast before setting off towards the town of Albertinia, which is overlooked by the striking Langeberg Mountain Range. You’ll travel back via George and Mossel Bay, stopping beforehand at Victoria Bay to enjoy a walk or swim and take in the spectacular scenery. On reaching Albertinia, you’ll join an afternoon open-vehicle game drive at a malaria-free private reserve, which is home to a spectrum of animals and birdlife, including South Africa’s ‘Big Five’ (lion, leopard, black rhinoceros, elephant and buffalo). This will be followed by a laid-back dinner of safari cuisine and an overnight stay in Albertinia.

Your safari experience continues with an early morning open-vehicle game drive, hopefully providing you with unforgettable sightings of the ‘Big Five’, along with a variety of other animal and bird life. Your journey will then take you on to the historic Cape Dutch town of Swellendam, which was founded in 1745 and is famous for its youngberries, as well as the surrounding nature reserves. You’ll continue on towards the coastal town of Hermanus, which is located at the heart of the whale route and during the months of August to November is one of the best places in the world to spot whales from the shore. Your day will finish with dinner at the Heritage Restaurant, which was once a fisherman’s cottage, and an overnight stay in Hermanus.

Following breakfast, you will set off to Franschhoek, in the Cape Winelands, where you will take a tour around the picturesque village set amongst the area’s vineyards and learn about its 300-year history and French heritage. You’ll then drive past Drakenstein Correctional Centre, formerly Victor Verster Prison, where anti-apartheid activist and former South African president Nelson Mandela was released in 1990. Your adventure will finally come to an end on arrival back in the nation’s legislative capital, Cape Town.
