My wife and I had a fantastic weeklong stay at UNICO 20°87° celebrating her birthday. The experience was truly exceptional thanks to the superb customer service from every staff member we encountered. From the moment we arrived, our concierge butler, Roger, was on top of all our reservation needs. He communicated clearly and kept us updated at all times. A big thank you as well to Eduardo, who took over in the late afternoon through the evening. The “Hall of Fame” level of service was consistently maintained between the two of them. Special thanks to Astrid at the 2087 restaurant for her outstanding service, Allan at the pool area, and Angie, who kept us entertained during the bingo session. They all played a big part in making our celebration truly memorable.

My partner and I just stayed here over the holidays and were completely blown away. The property was unbelievably clean. The service was phenomenal. The food options were great. Every staff member we encountered was friendly and attentive. What really made our stay were the activities planned and the instructors who lead them. Specifically David and Sebastian. They both brought incredible energy to our days and made our stay here exceed our expectations.

This was my husband’s and my second time visiting UNICO 20°87°, and somehow it managed to exceed the already incredible memories we had from our first stay. UNICO truly is one of the classiest, most thoughtfully designed resorts we’ve ever experienced, and the level of service is unmatched no matter where you are on the property. We stayed in a 5th-floor ocean-facing room, which was immaculate and beautifully maintained, with sweeping, unobstructed views of the ocean that never got old. Every detail felt intentional and elevated. Dining at UNICO continues to be a standout experience. We returned often to our favorite restaurant, Cueva Siete, where the blend of flavors is so unique and memorable. I loved seeing how the menu has evolved since our visit two years ago (though I’ll admit, I missed the birria!). Avec was open for the first time during this trip, and the beef Wellington was absolutely divine — a can’t-miss meal. Our pool days were made even better thanks to Antonio and his amazing team at the Legendary Pool. Their service was next-level, including custom mocktail creations delivered to us without us even having to ask. It’s those thoughtful touches that truly set UNICO apart. Most of all, our experience would not have been what it was without our butlers, Eduardo and Roger — they are truly family to us now. They made sure we never had to think, rush, or worry about a single thing. Their care, attentiveness, and warmth allowed us to fully relax and enjoy every moment of our stay. We absolutely adore UNICO, and it continues to set the bar higher every time we visit. We can’t wait to return again very soon.

It is so sad, as it is a mix of emotions writing this review. The mixed feelings come from the great staff at the pool and the quality of the service, unlike the experience at the front desk. We requested a late check-out and were told it would cost $120. When we asked for an extension, they granted it for 45 minutes, but then wanted to charge us because we couldn’t remember the name of the staff member who assisted with the exemption. After escalation, the manager kindly decided to waive the fee for this occasion. I had to hold back my comments as I’d had enough of being overcharged for what should be free, like the sauna—which costs $60 for a one-hour spa session. Additionally, the alcohol isn’t of high-end quality, and the best wines come with a markup of four times the retail price—twice the usual restaurant price. Expect to pay around $170 for a bottle of Moët. As for massages, they cost $350—what’s going on in Riviera Maya? The food at the restaurants is quite inconsistent, not impressive at all. Please note, the staff are very attentive and accommodating, but be aware that the printed menu contains some errors. Nonetheless, I must praise the wonderful staff like Melissa, Antonio, and Eugenio! I give them all the stars.

DO NOT STAY AT UNICO 20°87° RIVIERA MAYA – NOT A 5-STAR EXPERIENCE. *** In response to owner - bathrooms were NOT working in other locations. None of the pool area bathrooms worked and when asked of staff, there was no other options given. Lobby bathrooms, etc, were also not available for use. When asked to speak with management, they were "too busy" to speak to guests and yet no one else had any answers to our questions/concerns. Additionally no other compensation was offered for the inconvenience. *** I strongly advise you against staying at this resort. While we made the best of a bad situation and celebrated the happy couple. It does not deserve a 5-star rating. The customer service and cleanliness of the resort was disappointing and unacceptable for marketed for luxury. During our stay, we experienced cockroaches in our room and witnessed animals eating leftover room service dishes left in the hallways, sometimes for extended periods without being cleared. This alone raises serious concerns about cleanliness and sanitation. Most alarming, the resort went for over 15 hours without running water due to what staff described as an "unexpected and out of our control issue," During this time, there was no running water for sinks, showers or toilets. This means: - No ability to wash hands - Could not use the toilets to go to the bathroom (while some still used, you can imagine the smell without being able to flush) - No functioning air conditioning - No hand sanitizers or alternat hygiene resources were provided. For a luxury resort, this is completely unacceptable. Communication from the resort was minimal to nonexistent. We were largely left to figure out what we had heard to piece together the issue. When any of us (70+ in the booked group) tried to escalate concerns, we were told management was too busy to speak with us. This lack of accountability was shocking given the severity of the situation. Additional Issues throughout the stay: The restaurant reservation system was difficult to use and unreliable, resulting in missed or impossible reservations. Inconsistent drink service across multiple views. There was no visible cleaning or maintenance of the pool after the water outage. The compensation felt performative rather than meaningful: "free cabana" when cabanas were not really used, and only one spa option that would not realistically be booked with only one day left at the resort. They also offered a free night stay that expires in 1 year, and realistically no one is going to come here again. Overall, the resort failed basic hospitality, communication, sanitation and customer service. Nothing about this experience aligns with 5-start designation or luxury price point.
