Exceptional service, perfect location – and truly outstanding staff My daughter and I stayed at Taj Bentota Resort & Spa and were deeply impressed by the level of service throughout our stay. From the breakfast restaurant – where Sam in particular was an absolute joy to be greeted by each morning – to the housekeeping team who kept our room spotless and beautifully arranged every day, everything felt cared for and thoughtful. The location is ideal for anyone wanting to stay right by the ocean and still be within walking distance to 5–10 local restaurants and the train station. It's just a 5–10 minute tuk-tuk ride to the nearest larger town, yet the hotel itself is calm, peaceful, and the perfect spot to unwind. What truly made the stay unforgettable was the genuine warmth and attentiveness of the entire staff. Whether we had questions, needed to exchange money or simply wanted a recommendation, the team – especially the reception – always met us with a smile and sincere willingness to help. A special thanks to Hasani, who was incredibly helpful when I realized I had forgotten my VISA card in an ATM in a nearby town. Without hesitation, she called the bank and arranged for the card to be secured so I could pick it up safely. That kind of quick, proactive assistance was deeply appreciated. Another moment that touched me deeply involved Mahindalal, who stepped in when I was emotionally overwhelmed after turning down a kind local tour operator who had hoped to arrange another trip with us. I felt terrible disappointing him, and Mahindalal gently offered to call the man and explain on my behalf – with warmth, empathy and great respect. That moment alone lifted a huge emotional burden and reminded me how powerful true service can be. If I had to mention one thing the hotel could improve, it would be to consider a clearer pool policy. Many guests "reserved" sun loungers with towels for hours without actually using them, which made it unclear whether the loungers were free. Perhaps the hotel could introduce a deposit system for pool towels, as some guests took multiple towels and left them scattered, likely leading to unnecessary laundry and confusion. That said, this is a truly excellent hotel – and I wholeheartedly recommend it, especially because of the atmosphere created by its warm, personal, and absolutely exceptional staff. We would love to return.

Hotel was great and service exceptional. Chandimal our room boy was so helpful and kind and talented, creating towel sculptures sometimes as a surprise. Ruwan and others in the restaurant were tireless in their attention and always smiling. The food was excellent quality and copious. The location was fabulous except for the hooting train although that was picturesque. The beaches are superb. Pity about the undercurrents. The pool is enormous and enticing, fringed by palms. The pool staff were always on hand to find loungers. When it is up and running fully this hotel will be superb. At present the renovations are still taking place not that they disturbed anyone with noise. The rooms are spacious and facing west the incredible sunsets are on full view. Only one gripe, there is not enough drawer space for folded clothes. All in all a great 5 days stay. Vivien and Peter James
