⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ A perfect family-friendly resort overlooking the South China Sea Shangri-La Tanjung Aru, Kota Kinabalu is an excellent choice for families seeking comfort and quality. The resort is truly family-oriented, offering well-designed family rooms and complimentary toiletries for children, which were thoughtful touches. The spacious swimming pool is ideal for both kids and adults, allowing everyone to relax and enjoy. The breakfast buffet was excellent, featuring a wide selection of ASEAN and Western dishes to suit all tastes. One of the most memorable highlights was the breathtaking sunset over the South China Sea, creating a calm and beautiful atmosphere. Overall, a wonderful destination for a relaxing and memorable family getaway.

3rd time to this hotel. Currently undergoing a big renovation including adding another swimming pool, updating all rooms. All construction was well hidden and didn't disrupt the holiday at all. Sunset bar is a must but please book ahead as gets very busy for sunset, as you can imagine. Hanief the food and beverage manager is worth a mention as well as Paul from the pool area. In all fairness all the staff are so happy and go the extra mile Breakfast can get very busy around 8.00am so best to go early. Breakfast food selection is A1.

This was my first time travelling to Sabah, and staying at Shangri-La Tanjung Aru made the entire trip unforgettable. The moment I arrived, the atmosphere felt calm, welcoming, and beautifully maintained. The resort has a stunning beachfront view, especially during sunset, and the overall environment feels peaceful and luxurious at the same time. The staff were incredibly warm and attentive. Every interaction, from check in to dining to simple requests, was handled with genuine hospitality. They made me feel truly cared for throughout the stay. The rooms were comfortable and clean, with views that made waking up every morning feel special. The facilities were also impressive. The pool, the private beach area, and the dining options all added to the experience. Everything felt thoughtfully designed to give guests a relaxing and memorable holiday. This stay has set a new standard for me. It turned my first trip to Sabah into something truly meaningful, and I would absolutely return again. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a beautiful and unforgettable getaway.

We booked a Family Suite themed room costing over RM8,000 for 3 nights, and the experience was extremely disappointing given the price. The room layout is poorly designed and unsafe. The main entrance opens directly into the kids’ room, which means children can easily exit the room without adult supervision — a serious safety concern for families. In addition, the kids’ bed is placed right next to the corridor, making it very noisy and disruptive, especially at night. The room itself feels old, dated, and badly planned, which does not justify the premium pricing at all. It is severely overpriced for what is offered. Dining was another letdown. We ordered kids’ pasta, priced at RM29, and were served plain pasta with sauce only — not a single piece of vegetable or any nutritional balance. This is unacceptable for a children’s meal at a family-oriented resort. Overall, the service quality and attention to family needs need serious improvement, especially considering the rates charged. The only reason this stay does not receive a one-star rating is because the kids did enjoy the water theme park and swimming pool. I sincerely hope the management will take this feedback seriously and improve both the facilities and service standards to match the pricing and expectations of families.

Stayed at Shangri-La Tanjung Aru last week, booked through Booking.com. The stay itself was fine, however the post-stay service was extremely disappointing. I requested an official invoice for claim purposes. Despite multiple calls and follow-up messages, the hotel was unable to provide an official invoice or even any proof of stay, repeatedly citing "because you booked thru third-party platform". They said a tax invoice can only be issued if the booking is made through the hotel’s own website. This is the first time I have ever encountered such an issue, despite having stayed at many hotels where invoices are routinely issued regardless of booking platform. Even it should be an SOP to give an invoice during checkout. For a hotel of this standard, the lack of flexibility, poor coordination, and unreasonable justification are unacceptable. Highly frustrating experience for travellers who require proper documentation. Disappointing to see a well-known brand handling a very basic administrative request so poorly.
