Great location, walking distance to local night markets and shops near by to get basics like water and laundry. We had booked a Horizon room and the service offered by Min was exceptional, with anything we asked for not being an issue! We had breakfast here every morning which offered eggs to order, toasts and fruit. Concierge was excellent, always willing to help and offer recommendations of where to go. We used the pool one afternoon and it was very cold but refreshing. The gym was well equipped but spoilt by large groups, making a lot of noise, taking over the place and in short, shirt and sandals! Staff should enforce the rules for the gym.

We booked to stay at the Shangri-La for a week and it was so good we extended our stay! Everything about the hotel is superb and the hotel employees are amazing. We stayed on the Horizon floors with access to the Horizon lounge where breakfast, afternoon tea and evening drinks are served daily. There is also a concierge desk there where tours can be recommended and booked. The hotel has a lovely pool and health suite where again the staff were very attentive and helpful. The whole experience of staying there was very relaxing and a place to look forward to returning to each day. We would especially like to thank Pat, Noah, Sarah, Min and Mo who looked after us so courteously in the Horizon Lounge. Also, Joe and the other housekeeping staff who kept our suite so nicely. We would highly recommend a stay at the Shangri-La, Chiang Mai.

I had Thanksgiving dinner at Kad Kafé, and the variety of food was incredible, truly impressive. There was also live music in the restaurant, which made the atmosphere even more enjoyable. The staff were very warm and welcoming. Khun Tank and Khun Nan took great care of our table throughout the meal. Chef Eddy introduced me to the beef stew, and it was absolutely delicious so tender it felt like it melted in my mouth. Khun Moji was very attentive while serving the dishes, and Chef Ngek recommended so many wonderful desserts. I especially loved the rice pudding. Even when it came time to pay, Khun Kim and Khun Garfew still very thoughtful. If I have the chance, I would definitely come back to dine here again.

Extremely Disappointing Christmas Dinner Experience We booked Christmas dinner at the Shangri-La Chiang Mai well in advance for five people and had been genuinely looking forward to it. Unfortunately, the experience was extremely disappointing and far below the standard expected from a hotel of this reputation. When we arrived, our table had been mixed up. We completely understand that Christmas is busy and were patient about this. However, the table we were then given was unacceptable: dirty cutlery that had clearly not been cleaned from previous guests, and multiple half-full glasses of water left on the table with visible mouth marks on them. This was shocking from a hygiene perspective. We complained immediately, but it took several attempts before we could speak to a manager. We were then taken to another table but oddly were not allowed to sit down at it. Staff then tried to move us outside into the garden, despite the fact that we had booked an indoor table and were dining with a young baby. Only after continued back-and-forth were we finally seated inside. By the time everything was sorted and we had finished our meal, the majority of the desserts were “sold out” — despite this being advertised and sold as an all-you-can-eat buffet. Not being able to access a large portion of what we had paid for at a buffet is completely unacceptable, especially for a pre-booked Christmas dinner. What made the experience even more disappointing was the lack of any real apology or effort from staff to resolve the situation or compensate in any way. This was meant to be a special Christmas celebration, and instead it was stressful, unhygienic, and deeply disappointing. For a hotel that markets itself as a luxury resort, this experience fell well below expectations.

Where are all the stars gone ? Definitely not a 5 star. The Pros: • Excellent service from Waii: Waii stood out for her warm, professional demeanor — assisting during the airport meet-and-greet and again at the Horizon Club Lounge. Her attentiveness was a highlight in an otherwise inconsistent service experience. • Beautiful sunset views: The view from our room on the 12th floor was nice, especially during sunset — a definite visual treat. • Spacious rooms: The room was large and comfortable, offering plenty of space to relax. Cons: • Ageing property: The hotel feels dated throughout, from the room décor to general facilities. It lacks the modern touch and freshness expected from a hotel in this category. • Service inconsistencies: Outside of Waii, service left much to be desired. Despite a late departure, we were not allowed to stay in the lounge and were instead directed to wait in the lobby — an experience that felt unaccommodating and lacked hospitality. • Dull atmosphere: Compared to newer properties in the area like the Marriott, which feels lively and contemporary, Shangri-La felt overly quiet and somewhat lifeless. • Lounge shortcomings: The Horizon Club Lounge is undersized for the number of guests it serves, especially during cocktail hours. Some popular spirits were unavailable in the lounge but found elsewhere in the hotel. When I asked to speak with management about this, the duty manager said the concern would be passed on, but I never received any follow-up. Overall: While the hotel offers spacious rooms and good views, the dated facilities and inconsistent service make it hard to recommend over other options in Chiang Mai. A full renovation and stronger attention to guest experience would help bring Shangri-La Chiang Mai closer to the luxury standard it aims to represent.
