I was in Fuerteventura for five days in 2023 after the death of my grandmother. I spontaneously booked half board and I have to say it was the best decision I made. The hotel is a bit out of the way and you have to walk about 20-30 minutes to the center of the village, but it was fantastic. The massage was very relaxing and the pool was refreshing. There is even a shuttle that picks you up in the morning and takes you to the Oasis Wildlife. The staff are very friendly and always help where they can. The buffet in the evening has endless choices and the same goes for breakfast. I was able to relax well during the difficult time and can recommend it to everyone.

In my eyes this hotel isn't 4 star due to the staff and the sick/ sewer smell that seemed to get worse by the end of the week. Positives the hotel is stunning the pools, the main building glass lift. These are the only positive of the resort There is no private beach, or mini golf which was advertised to us. The hotel beach is under construction. The nearest beach is 10/15 mins away. Restaurants is a shamble, everything is everywhere. There is not enough cutlery, glasses or plates. Simple solution buy more. There isn't any seats if it rains or you come prime time. We had turkey that wasn't cooked properly. Waiters see you as a issue at first I thought maybe it's down to Brits behaving badly abroad but it was all people from different background. Everything is too hard for them they don't want to clear tables, you wait for glasses for your drink. Bar staff were the same with constant eye rolls I even started talking to them to see if that helped it didn't. They are either very short staffed and stressed all the time or someone purposely hired miserable staff. Entertainment was ok with a 20 mins mini disco. The entertainment man who done a hat act was lovely and polite. He interacted with the kids. There are no shops near with the nearest supermarket 30 mins walk. Obviously you can get taxi for less time. Beds are rock hard which is preference. I asked for mattress topper they delivered 2 but we had 3 beds. So I requested another one twice and it never turned up. When you speak to reception they treat you like a burden so I didn't go back. The positive is the swimming pool and look of the hotel even when checking out there was no hope you've enjoyed your stay. It was this is your room charge cash or card that's it! Do you need a receipt! There was no hospitality! Staff all need training!

The dinner and breakfast buffets can be described as follows: there is everything you could want and always of the poorest quality. If good food is of any significance to you, stay away. The rooms are pretty noisy due to rigid connections. I can clearly hear the heavy balcony furniture being scraped around the floor by the maids as I'm writing this. Also, the main windows in our suite didn't actually close. They also put nauseatingly heavy smelling air refresher in the room which we had to vacate to the balcony. The furniture is run down and the lounge table even was completely cracked. The whirlpool bathtub in the suites can only be activated for 15min per day and don't even get me started on the spa. It has seen better days. Tiles are lose, the hammam is rusty and the sauna was dirty. The hotel itself is located a little isolated from the town of Costa Calma and the beach is a 20min walk. However, there's a medium rocky/sandy beach 5min away with a kite-spot, if that's your jam. The hotel grounds are the only thing that reflects positively on management, as it is a true oasis of beauty on this desert island. All in all, I would strongly advice against staying here.

The hotel exceeded our expectations, everything around was like in a fairytale. Kind stuff, pools with nice view, palm trees, the restaurant with stunning variety and hotel with clean rooms. The bar had a lot of different drinks with very nice and funny bartenders. As of Jan 2025, there was a reconstruction of the closest beach access, so we had to walk about 15 minutes to get to comfy sandy beach. Otherwise, perfect!

A Beautiful Escape – Our Stay at R2 Rio Calma, Fuerteventura We arrived at R2 Rio Calma late at night, and from the moment we stepped into the reception area, we knew we were somewhere special. The building itself is absolutely gorgeous—designed in a grand, almost ancient style with beautiful columns, elegant arches, and a striking round stained-glass window that immediately catches your eye. It has a warm, welcoming charm, enhanced by an interesting industrial twist—some of the arches are finished in raw cement, giving the space a unique and modern edge. The soaring ceilings, clad in oak-style panels, complete the picture beautifully. Our initial impression of the room, however, was a little underwhelming. It felt quite sparse, and there were a few maintenance issues that caught our eye—a wardrobe that was a bit stiff to open and some plaster gone awry on the wall. At first glance, I would have rated it three stars out of five. But by morning, our perspective completely changed. What some might call “dated,” I’d describe as rustic and vintage—it really grew on us. The rooms were spotless and cleaned daily, which we appreciated. As daylight revealed the lush gardens, sweeping views, and incredible pools, we decided we’d made a great choice. Staff interactions were a bit mixed—some were a little reserved at first—but others, especially the animation team, were fantastic. A special shoutout to Alessandro and Lori, who were incredibly warm and welcoming, especially with our children. They really added something special to our stay. The food was another highlight—varied, plentiful, and consistently good. While the nearest beach is pebbly rather than sandy, the resort’s pools are so impressive and inviting that we didn’t feel the need to leave often. That said, we did venture out to Morro Jable, a beautiful local beach that felt more authentic and less touristy, and walked from there to Jandia, which also has a lovely stretch of beach and some great little shops for snacks and souvenirs. One of the standout days was a boat trip where we swam in the Atlantic—a magical experience that will stay with us for a long time. All in all, our seven days in Fuerteventura were some of the best we’ve ever had. R2 Rio Calma turned out to be a perfect choice. We loved our room’s location, enjoyed the serene setting, and appreciated the effort of the staff. It may not be a perfect five-star luxury resort in the traditional sense, but for us, it delivered a five-star experience—and we would absolutely return.
