I visited Quinta da Bela Vista in mid October. Be prepared that the hotel is full of inconsistencies. As you arrive at the hotel, there are rounded stairs, with no railings as you enter. It was October but entrance and shrubs look tired. When you observe and see the folks waiting in the lobby you realize, hand railings would be a good idea. Carpets thorough out the first floor were stained and covered with oriental runners that had spots. Bottom line rugs need to be replaced.
Positives, once inside the first floor room, the rug was not stained, room was stately and old fashioned. Breakfast was exceptional, a variety of fresh pastries, eggs, ham and more. The grounds of the hotel and paths around the property are well designed but poorly lit. We dined at the bar at the end of the pool one evening, but the candles were inside the lounge with no lights outside by the pool. Dangerous and difficult to see what you are eating.
Bus service to town great during the week, but no transport on weekends. There is a nice parking lot for folks that drive to the hotel in their car. As for the rest of us that don't have a car, don't try to walk to town. You can walk to a bus stop but it requires a wait. This is not the kind of hotel should walk to town, and I am a seasoned traveler. Best bet grab a cab, they are cheap on Madeira.
Good luck to Quinta da Bela Vista, hope you can make some improvements to bring the hotel back to what it once was.

Just back from our 4th visit. The hotel has bags of Old World charm, not found in modern concrete boxes. The staff are wonderful: friendly and attentive. The food is always good in the main restaurant, rising to wonderful in the a la carte restaurant. Away from the town centre and the biz, if that's what you want - and it is what my wife and I want, with great views over Funchal Bay. We,ll be back!

Set high up in the hillside 4km/5km from Funchal with stunning views of Funchal harbour and the city, this hotel seems to take you back to the old colonial days in Kenya in the 60s when the rich and famous lived in luxury away from the madding crowd!! It is close to perfect. Wonderful staff, excellent breakfast, beautiful gardens and a swimming pool set amongst the trees flowers and plants around which you can relax and fill your lungs with Madieran air. And.....no children. Reception will organise excursions around the Island and there is a shuttle bus service to/fro Funchal. 7 nights of peace....and tranquility....wow!!

An elegant hotel - an 18th century villa set in a large garden with huge forest trees. The Bela Vista is rather quaint .... and though it could do with a bit of TLC we loved it for all its quirkiness. We stayed on a half board basis a delicious 4 course meal every night ! Served by the friendliest most charming waiting staff. Sonia and Carina just have to be named. Great breakfasts too. Lovely heated pool ... plenty of sun beds . Pool bar served a good range of lunches. The hotel is not near the seafront but regular buses costing € 1.95 take you there - bus stop about 5 min uphill walk from the gate. There's a shuttle bus but oddly it doesn't run at weekends! So quiet in the evening ... so relaxing. We joined others in the bar over a glass or 2 in the bar in the evenings. Not a hotel for children and tbh most guests were 50+ while we were there. They need better lighting on the cobbled pathways. So glad we chose this hotel!
