I have been travelling the world and I have experienced a lot of hotels and 5 stars hotel and this is not a 5 stars hotel standards. I have to say the staff is extremely nice and they work really hard and long hours! So congratulations to them for making this place a bit more enjoyable. The room are not good. Windows are not isolated when it’s windy and raining the window door just keep making noises it seems like it’s gonna explose. You can hear so loud the rain in the room. The bed is so hard and we are couple and we have been given a twin bed bedroom. We were a family of 4 couples and none of us got double bed. The food is not good. For the buffet it’s always more or less the same options which i understand but it’s very oily and fat. Once you live the buffer area your clothes just stink and smell. There’s no air in the restaurant its very hot Indoor pool is cold This place really need some hardcore renovation and sorry but I believe that owners have enough money for it to happen But please don’t say that it’s a 5 stars hotel cause it is truly not

We had a wonderful stay at Pestana Royal in Funchal. Our room was great, with an amazing ocean view that made the experience even more special. The staff were extremely friendly, helpful, and always welcoming. The food was nice overall, with good variety and quality. In general, it’s a very nice hotel and we really enjoyed our stay.

We stayed here for one night after Jet2 cancelled our flights. Like some of the other comments there were stains on the chairs and sofas although the bed linen was clean and unmarked. Some of our fellow guests had no water in their rooms on the higher floor. The food was really bad. Think preform bacon made with flour and other low quality meat for breakfast. The lunch wasn't much better. Dinner was only saved by the tuna we had. Bareable for a day but you would quickly want to eat elsewhere if you were there for any longer. The unlimited bar was good and the swimming pools looked good but we didn't try them. It may be 5 star in facilities but it's not 5 star in terms of quality.

Beautiful traditional hotel in a fantastic location with amazing views of the ocean. The staff were incredibly kind and helpful, and really made our stay feel warm and welcoming. It’s close to Funchal and the hotel offers a free shuttle twice a day. There are buses going to different towns around the island too, which makes it easy to explore. The food was excellent every day (especially the desserts) and breakfasts were made extra special by live music every morning – guitar or piano – which added a lovely, relaxed atmosphere. Room service was excellent too! The hotel is suitable for everyone: elderly guests, young couples and families. There are several pools, plenty of sun loungers, a mini golf, a tennis court, and even a simple spa and a gym. I loved how close it was to the beach, with an elevator leading down the cliff straight to the sea – very convenient, and the waves were great fun! The only minor issues were a slight damp smell in the cupboards (all my clothes smelled even after arriving home and washing the clothes in the washing machine...), and the coffee, which wasn’t great – if you’re a coffee lover, you’ll probably want to find a café outside the hotel. Overall, we had a wonderful week, met lovely people, and left with great memories. I’d definitely recommend this hotel and will happily return!

Stunning hotel. We were fortunate to be able to stay here when our flight home from Funchal was grounded due to high winds. The hotel lobby certainly has the wow factor and it also has beautiful gardens that stretch down to the pool and jacuzzi areas. It is also close to the beach, which has black sand. The hotel is all inclusive and the food is amazing. When we stayed, the theme was French cuisine and there was plenty of choice and lots for us to eat as vegans. Everything was delicious and fresh. The staff made sure our wine glasses were always topped up. There is also a bar where the entertainment takes place and this has a cocktail bar as well as self serve areas and a snack bar. We enjoyed the board games and musical entertainment. The indoor pool was a bit cold but we enjoyed our swim and the sauna and outdoor jacuzzi. The rooms were very clean and well maintained. Our balcony overlooked the beautiful garden. Thank you for looking after us during a difficult situation and making us feel like welcome guests. The staff were all so kind to us.
