The hotel is quite dated, the beds are very firm. The food and beverages are fresh and plentiful, there's something for everyone. The facilities are good. It's a bit far from Funchal Town but is accessible by the hotels shuttle bus or local bus. I'd probably stay a bit nearer in future but the benefit here is there's no noise accept for the waves on the beach right outside.

I spent 6 wks at this hotel, as a solo traveler, so I'll talk about the pros and cons ! I'll also say that this hotel is scheduled to close for renovations in the fall of 2024. Cons: The biggest con is the location. Yes, it's on the beach, with great access to the promenade. To go anywhere else is a hassle, no matter how you do it ! It's either a long walk through the "tunnel", then up the hills to Estrada Monumental, or if you're lucky enough to get the elevator key to the Pestana Royal, you're still talking about 2 flights of stairs and a hike through the hotel. You can't just walk out of the hotel onto the main street ! The hotel does provide a free shuttle into Funchal, but it only runs each way 2X a day. One little tip I did figure out halfway through my stay is that rather than taking expensive taxis into Funchal, or anywhere along the way, you can hop on the airport bus which stops right outside the hotel. Just buy a round trip ticket, and you can get off where you like, and then catch the bus at the same, or another location along the way to return back to the hotel. The Aerobus runs quite frequently, and the cost as of 1 Feb is 6E one way, or 10 e round trip. The next con is the volume of people that pass through this hotel, esp if there are flight cancellations. The buffets get very crowded, esp at dinner......I started calling it "the high school cafeteria" but with a senior population ! Also, if you don't get there early, some items are gone, and then replaced with something else, which may be inferior. At breakfast, the pastries and sometimes the fruits are wiped out by 9 am if there is a large crowd in the hotel. The third con is that since this is an all inclusive, there are tons of boozers.......Some people drink from early morning until the bar closes at 11pm. It's quite pathetic to see older people not able to get back to their room because they are so loaded........I even witnessed a woman sprain her ankle when she climbed down from the stage after karaoke.........Sad........ Now for the pros ! 99 % of the staff are wonderful ! Almost everyone is friendly and helpful ! There was only 1 person that I didn't jive with, but I will not name him. I thought he was extremely rude.......The men and women that work cleaning tables and restocking everything work extremely hard...EXTREMELY hard ! The rooms are large, as are the balconies. All rooms face the ocean, so it was wonderful to watch the sunsets every night ! The rooms are a bit dated, but that wasn't an issue for me. The Tues - Sat cleaning woman was wonderful, and a nice person. The weekend crew could improve their cleaning. I hope that during the renovation, the bathtubs will be removed and replaced with walk in showers. Many older people are not able to climb into a tub every day to take a shower ! Overall, the food was decent. More so during the holiday weeks, as the room prices were higher. One can always find something even if it's cheese and crackers. The food temps could be hotter, and after 6 weeks, I was pretty tired of the food, regardless of quality, as many items are repetitive, especially the salads. The music in the lobby area, just about every night, is a nice touch ! Most of the music is middle of the road, with lots of good dancing music. I made good use of the pools, more so the smaller one, as it was a bit warmer. My only suggestion is that there should be a hand rail on the stairs, especially in light of the population of this hotel. Would I stay here again? Probably not, due mostly to the location, and the fact that it's AI...I also tired of the volume of people , especially the loud ones , but that's just a personal preference !

We loved our holiday at Pestana Ocean Bay. We made the most of seeing Madeira in a week and starting the day with a hearty breakfast ending it with a ready meal at the end of the day was great. Food and drinks were ok. Some days better than others, overall good. They did prepare packed lunch if you asked the day before but we enjoyed eating out whilst visiting places or walking.

Oh, what a joy, Pestana Ocean Bay. Don't you forget to come. Come and visit the only Pestana Ocean Bay with a very old style and a very soft bed. The food is as you say, fresh and delicious, and a very calm atmosphere. And very good management, good chef, friendly staff, I liked everything😍🤗

Excellent setting, a bit simpler food but of a good quality but: 1) the windows in rooms are very old and they do not isolate from the noise of breaking waves at the seashore. We were merely unable to sleep for the first 2 nights, then we got used to it. 2) wifi signal in the rooms is very weak. 3) the spa facility is really really simple - the hamman smelled and in the sauna the max temperature was around 57 deg. C + there were broken benches.
