We loved our dining experience at the Marenostrum restaurant. We have made over twenty trips worldwide and our server Moises stands out as one of the best! He provided exceptional hospitality and service. Serving is a skill mastered by Moises and his warmth, attentiveness and intuitiveness make him stand out. It was all so natural to him that we think these skills have been perfected over many years. We trust that management will recognize him for his unique talents.

A few things to note before you go… Food and dining: Room service costs extra. When I am at an all inclusive, food and booze are what I think of inclusive. Even if they had a cut off time of 11pm, that would be fine. Sometimes the adults wanna go have a nice dinner while the kids stay in the room and could eat their own dinner there. But there was no option to have food outside of restaurants or buffets. No eating at the pool. There were buffets near the pool you could eat at but no taking food out. The buffet at the Colonial and Tropical was the same EVERY night (with one or 2 items changing). Be sure to go to Beach and/or Caribe buffet to switch it up. They had a much better selection of food. Upon check in you are given only a few dining cards to use at the restaurants (you will be eating at buffet a lot!!) No beach service. Make sure to bring your yetis to fill up your cups at the pool bar, cuz no one is coming to the beach to take your drink order. Need an app!! In today’s day and age, an app for reservations and daily activities would be beneficial to your guests. No one wants to have to run down to guests services to make resos and find out there is no availablities. They could have found that out without leaving the room with an app. The room key and bracelet are not the same. Many hotels now use your wristband as a door key-that would be a much better option. Service and accommodations: Staff was friendly. The grounds were clean well kept. Rooms are dated but if you look at the pics, you know that. The showers are not amazing (tall people beware). Beds and pillows were comfy enough. The bus was a nice touch. Overall we enjoyed ourselves but will be choosing a different hotel chain for our next vacation.

Where should I begin? First, I would advise readers not to rely on bot reviews or reviews from first-time travelers for whom hearing a language other than English is the highlight of the trip. We have traveled extensively throughout the Riviera Maya, including a prior stay at this hotel. Unfortunately, things have changed—and not for the better. The grounds and beach are visually appealing. However, swimming requires caution due to underwater boulders, with only a few cleared areas offering safer access. Our room was filthy, featuring a rusted bathtub and a shower clogged by hard-water buildup. The room where our daughter stayed was not much better, with an electrical outlet ripped out of the wall. When we reported these issues to the front desk, no meaningful resolution was offered. We were shown another room that was in equally poor condition. Dining presented additional problems. For reasons that were never explained, the staff initially refused to seat a party of five at a single table. This issue was only resolved after we stated that there were six of us. The food was mediocre at best, with little variety and poor quality—“some of yellow, some of green” (Vegas Vacation). This is what one would expect from a 2.5–3-star property. I have no issue with 3-star hotels when they are accurately represented. The problem here is the misleading promotion of this resort as a 5-star property when it clearly does not meet that standard. As for the specialty restaurants, they do exist; however, we attempted to make reservations immediately upon arrival and were told that the only available times were at 9:30 p.m. for the whole week of our stay. This may be acceptable to some guests, but it is disappointing when one has paid for a so-called 5-star experience and received something closer to a Motel 6. If you have already booked this hotel and still have an opportunity to change your reservation, do so without a second thought.

We had an incredible stay at Barceló Maya Colonial and would highly recommend it. One of the first things that stood out was how clean and well maintained the entire resort is. You can tell a lot of care goes into every detail. The buffet and restaurants were amazing with an impressive variety of food. No matter what we were in the mood for there was always something fresh delicious and satisfying. What truly made our stay special were Jovany Martinez and Alfredo Tinah our buffet waiters. They went above and beyond to make us feel welcomed, seen and genuinely valued every single day. Their kindness, attention and warmth added so much to our experience. Overall an excellent resort with outstanding service. We would absolutely return

I’ve never had an experience this bad at any resort, let alone one that costs this much. Where do I even start? The food was completely inedible. Multiple meals came out with hair in them, the buffet had bugs crawling on the tables, and somehow the food was still undercooked. Two people in my room got so sick they couldn’t leave the bathroom. We literally went three full days without being able to eat a proper meal because everything felt unsafe. Trying to get a reservation at any restaurant? Impossible. Everything was booked out the entire stay. We were denied at the other resorts too, so we were basically trapped with terrible food options we couldn’t even eat. Our room? No A/C. Just a hot, humid oven we were stuck sleeping in while already sick. We called the front desk multiple times and absolutely nothing was done. Zero urgency, zero solutions. And to top it off, we paid thousands to attend a show here and could barely even make it. Between the miles of walking required and being violently sick from the food, we missed most of what we paid for. This place was unsafe, unsanitary, and totally unprepared. For the price we paid, this was a complete joke. I wouldn’t recommend this resort to anyone — not even as a prank. Spend your money somewhere that actually cares about basic cleanliness, functional rooms, and, you know… food you can eat without getting sick.
