We had a great time at Angaga Resort. Starting with a (premium water) bungalow, to the really delicious and various and never boring food during breakfast and dinner, to the cleanliness in the resort, to the always very nice and friendly staff - there wasn't absolutely anything that didn't contribute to a wonderful holiday. However, we have some concerns reg. 2 aspects: In our opinion, disposable plastic bottles for drinking water are no longer acceptable – there are better and more resource-saving options i.e. in the form of refillable bottles (yes, also as plastic – if anyone is afraid of broken glass). Yes, it's not that convenient and easy going but if you reflect about the quantity of plastic waste that is accumulating just on Angaga per day and which has to be expensively disposed in one way or another - scary... Another point are the offered fishing tours on the bulletin board at reception. While diving and snorkeling during our stay, we saw sharks on 3 occasions that had a fishing hook in their mouth, dragging the torn off remains of some meters of fishing lines behind. Anyone signing in for these kind of holiday activities should be aware of the often fatal consequences for the (luckily?) escaped victims of these kind of „adventures“. However, more important than the demand of bored tourists seeking the thrill in torturing creatures should be the offer itself. Having the Maldives in mind by making a point in the maritime & environmetal protection in the past - these kind of „adventures“ do not make sense at all from our personal perspective. That’s just sad and a no-go for us while sharks are threatened with extinction in so many maritim areas. Why not taking off that offer from the bulletin board?

Beautiful!😍 Food: We had half board, and the food was delicious and fresh. I followed the rule of eating only cooked or packaged food, avoiding open, pre-cut fruits, and my stomach felt great the entire time. It would be nice if the main bar offered a more varied menu with more healthy snacks. At breakfast and dinner, I’m not a fan of jams, spreads, or sauces sitting in large open bowls. I’d prefer smaller portions that run out and get replaced, ensuring freshness. The servers were all very kind and attentive. For breakfast, I would love to see options like oatmeal and nuts added. Overall, everything was very tasty!

Our stay at Angaga exceeded expectations.  We absolutely loved it here, and are so glad we went with staying at Angaga.  The house reef is out of this world.  I could not believe how amazing the snorkeling was.  There were black and white tipped sharks, sting rays, eagle rays, turtles, more fish than I could count, and an octopus.  We would go snorkeling multiple times per day.Our room was on the sunset side, and the sunsets were fantastic.  The room was cleaned twice per day, and the service in the restaurant was amazing (we had Firat - he was wonderful).  We were in the "older" overwater bungalows, but I thought it was great.  I think the newer ones are further away from the restaurants (but they do have a sunset bar). The food was good - there were lots of options (it's buffet style).  Also, although the resort had a high occupancy while we were there, the only time we realized it was at dinner (there were always plenty of tables available when we went to eat - it was great how you barely notice all of the other people also staying at the resort). We did 2 snorkeling excursions, 1 manta ray excursion, and a visit to the spa.  I highly recommend all of these.  In making the reservations, the team who answered all of my questions were always responsive and helpful.  Our only complaint - the seaplane going back to Male was over an hour late, which made our trip home a little stressful.  Luckily, the resort made special accommodations to expedite our travel once we arrived in Male so we could make our flight home.  The team who works for the seaplane did a great job of meeting us when we landed, and shuttling us immediately over to the airport.  We are so glad we selected Angaga!

The island is very small with a beautiful reef and fish. The villas are a bit old and need renovation, as is the beach. There was no beach in front of my villa, it was just a cliff, but it looks like they are trying and renovating. The staff is very friendly. I will probably come back in two years if they renovate the villas and the beach a bit.

Overall Experience This is not a 4-star resort by today’s standards. It may have been one 20 years ago, but it no longer meets current expectations. The price–quality ratio is not fair, especially compared to other Maldivian resorts in the same category. The general infrastructure is around 30 years old and only very partially renovated, with the exception of some newer overwater bungalows. Most facilities feel outdated and poorly maintained. ⸻ ❌ Negative Points Generator Noise A generator runs 24/7 in the center of the island. Given the very small size of the island, the noise is constant and clearly audible from bungalows and beaches. Instead of being lulled by the sound of waves at night, you hear a continuous mechanical hum. Unpleasant Odors The staff dining and operational areas are concentrated in the center of the island, very close to guest areas, resulting in persistent unpleasant smells in several locations. Fresh Water Policy • No complimentary fresh water served during meals – unacceptable at this level. • Paid water is served in single-use PET plastic bottles, which is a serious environmental inconsistency for a Maldives resort. Rooms & Furnishings • Mattresses are very old and extremely hard. • Sur-mattresses were provided but smelled musty and poorly stored. • Furniture and fittings are clearly 20+ years old, with walls in poor condition and visible deterioration. Bar Service • Very poor service quality • Dirty tables • Staff with very limited English • Long waiting times even for simple drinks Beach Comfort • Beach sunbeds are very old, narrow, and uncomfortable • Mattresses are extremely thin (around 2 cm), offering low comfort Manta & Whale Shark Excursions All excursions took place in front of other resorts, requiring over 1 hour by boat. Many guests were joking that it would have been far cheaper to simply book a resort closer to those sites and avoid paying for long, expensive day trips. Private Boat and shop pricing The price requested for a 3-hour private boat (USD 450) is excessive and difficult to justify. While we were lucky enough to see a whale shark—which fortunately made the day memorable—the pricing remains disproportionate to the service offered. Regarding the souvenir shop, the value for money of the offering is highly questionable. ⸻ ✅ Positive Points Staff Most of the staff are friendly, warm, and genuinely welcoming, especially at: • The main restaurant • Reception • Dive center Unfortunately, this does not extend to the bar teams. Food • Good overall variety • Appreciable effort to reuse ingredients creatively (e.g. salads from previous meals) Areas for improvement: • Ice creams taste artificial • Meat quality and tenderness • Croissants lack flavor • Mango should be served daily when in season in the Maldives Spa Excellent massages and very good infrastructure. The spa delivers the overall quality and experience that should be expected across the entire resort. ⸻ Final Remark I am a graduate of EHL Hotel Business School and have worked in several luxury hotels, including resorts in the Maldives. This feedback is professional and based on hospitality industry standards. Angaga Island Resort has potential due to its location and staff, but without a major renovation, improved sustainability practices, and better service consistency, it does not justify its 4-star positioning nor its pricing.
