The capital of the Maldives, Malé, is situated at the southern end of North Malé Atoll, which extends for around 40km from west to east and around 60km from north to south. Velana International Airport (MLE) is also located on North Malé Atol. North Malé Atoll is the most explored and popular part of the Maldives and is home to around 50 little islands, many of which have been developed as a single resort - it's this exclusivity which holds great appeal for travellers craving a unique holiday experience in a luxury 'resort island' hideaway in the sun.
The main islands in North Malé Atoll include Dhiffushi, Gaafaru, Thulusdhoo, Eriyadhoo, Funadhoo, Hulhumalé, Bandos and Hulhulé. They are home to glorious beaches, incredible coral reefs and breath-taking scenery. North Malé Atoll is a magnet for diving enthusiasts seeking an underwater adventure of a lifetime in the many incredible dive sites including Banana Reef, Prisca, Hannes Reef, Fairytale Reef, and Meeru. Venture under the water and you'll encounter a plethora of amazing reefs, marine life and even a few shipwrecks - the most famous is Maldives Victory Wreck.
South Malé Atoll is separated from North Malé Atoll by a very deep channel, Vaadhu Kandu. It is oblong-shaped and is around 35km in length. It comprises 22 islands which are mainly located around the eastern fringe. The atoll's interior features a myriad of coral patches and reef which can prove very difficult to navigate.
There's plenty to see and do in South Malé Atoll and popular activities include sailing, snorkelling, diving, dolphin and whale watching, island hopping, catamaran cruises and a range of thrilling water sports. Popular South Malé Atoll islands include Velassaru, Olhuveli , Maafushi, Dhigufinolhu, Rannalh and Emboodhu Finolhu. The atoll's beautiful sandy expanses include Biyadoo Beach, Rannalhi Beach and Kandooma Beach.
