Events and Festivals in the Algarve


There’s no shortage of lively annual festivals and celebrations in the Algarve which provide enjoyable spectacles for visitors to the region.

Feira de Santa Iria

This takes place over several days in October when Faro city hosts a huge celebration in honour of St. Irene. Fun fairs, tasty treats, hand-made crafts and a bumper fun fair are among the attractions this make this a must-see event.

Portimão Sardine Festival

The Algarve is famous for its sardines and this event, usually held in August, celebrates the tasty seafood catch with a rousing spectacle of music and entertainment. As you would expect there are plenty of delicious sardines to eat, grilled over charcoal.

Silves Medieval Festival

This takes place in August and is one of the Algarve's biggest and best summer festival. The city of Silves stages a spectacular Medieval extravaganza with a lively fair, period costumes and thrilling jousting events.

What to eat in the Algarve


You’ll discover plenty of wonderful dining venues all across the Algarve, with gastronomic delights that will send your taste buds into raptures.

Feijoada is a hearty bean stew made with pork, cured meat, beans, vegetables and various herbs, while a Francesinha is a scrumptious kind of sandwich packed with various meats and enchidos, before being topped with melted cheese.

Cataplana de marisco is a seafood speciality comprising lobster, squid, clams and anything else you wish to add. Then it’s just a case of frying them all with herbs, white wine and tomatoes.

A tasty sweet treat is Pastéis de nata which are small cakes filled with a sweet orange cream. They are normally served with cinnamon and sugar.

Among the eating places of note in the Algarve are São Gabriel near Quinta do Lago resort, Restaurante L14 in Albufeira, Henrique Leis in Faro and A Quinta near Almancil.
