Dubrovnik Riviera

The fairy-tale destination that is the Dubrovnik Riviera gives all other European riviera’s a run for their money. The 20km stretch of craggy coastline adorned with pines and castles remains relatively unspoilt, with a smattering of luxury resorts and clifftop restaurants where you can dine al fresco and enjoy unparalleled views over azure waters. Get amongst the stunning emerald seas and take a kayak from Betina Cave Beach, just outside the centre of Medieval Dubrovnik. The city centre itself will have you spellbound from the moment you step foot inside its 13th Century walls, where a sea of terracotta roofs floats over the bustling metropolis below.

There really is much to see and do in this 20km stretch of magical rugged coastline - not least of all the enchanting city of Dubrovnik where the old and new combine perfectly to leave visitors awestruck by its magic and charm.

The Old Town is encircled by enthralling 13 th century walls and you’ll also be vowed by the jaw- dropping historical landmarks including Minceta Tower, Pile Gate, Fort Lovrijenac, Dubrovnik Cathedral and Loggia Square.

This contrasts with the modern side of Dubrovnik with its fabulous nightlife, magnificent bars and restaurants, boutique hotels, excellent shops and thrilling water sports on the sea.

There’s something for everyone in the Dubrovnik Riviera when it comes to enjoying a fantastic beach holiday in a sun-kissed coastal resort.

The superb beaches range from long family-friendly expanses with a myriad of activities on the sand and sea, to peaceful and tranquil bays and coves, which are a great choice for couples seeking a romantic stroll along the sands or cocktails under the stars in a beachfront bar.

Banje Beach is a family-friendly sandy expanse a short walk from the Old Town. There’s plenty of action on the waves here including wakeboarding, water-skiing, parasailing, kayaking and banana boat rides. You’ll also discover an excellent restaurant which transforms into a lively nightclub after dark.

Lapad is a safe and enclosed sandy beach which is close to many popular hotels. There are plenty of activities and attractions here including a waterslide, communal trampoline, fairground games and a host of bars and restaurants.

A pleasant option for couples and families is to take the short taxi boat ride over to the island of Lokrum where you’ll find a host of secluded beaches and hidden coves.

Šulici is a quaint and quiet half-moon beach below Dubrovnik's landmark fortress of Lovrijenac. This is a delightful hideaway from the hustle and bustle on some of the livelier beaches.

Sveti Jakov is a quiet and peaceful pebble beach not far from Dubrovnik which is renowned for its magnificent sunsets. This is a lovely romantic option for couples.

Other superb beaches in Dubrovnik include Dance Beach, Bellevue Beach and Stikovica Beach.

Events and Festivals in the Dubrovnik Riviera

There are several annual festivals and celebrations in the Dubrovnik Riviera. Here are a few of the most popular ones.

Feast of St Blaise

This is one of the biggest events in Dubrovnik's calendar to mark the anniversary of the martyrdom of St. Blaise. The event in February commences with the release of doves in front of St Blaise’s Church by the Bishop of Dubrovnik. A host of activities are staged including a procession along Stradun, concerts, exhibitions, workshops and cultural celebrations.

Dubrovnik Carnival

This takes place for several days before Ash Wednesday when masked and costumed groups parade through the streets. There's a true carnival atmosphere with plenty of singing, dancing, wine and food.

Dubrovnik Summer Festival

A huge range of performances are staged in venues around the city, from ballet to choral singing. The main event is the traditional production of Hamlet in Fort Lovrijenac.

What to eat in the Dubrovnik Riviera

The gastronomic delights of the Dubrovnik Riviera are heavily influenced by Montenegrin, Bosnian and Italian cuisines.

Seafood is a big favourite and there's no shortage of a fresh supply from the Adriatic waters. Popular dishes are crni rižot, which is squid ink risotto, and mušule na buzaru, mussels cooked in white wine.

Zelena menestra is a traditional green stew which is made with meat, potatoes and cabbage. This is a true classic in Dubrovnik and there's written evidence of it being prepared as far back as 1480.

Rozata is a delicious dessert which has been prepared in Dubrovnik since the Middle Ages. It is a type of custard pudding made with eggs, milk, sugar and a local rose liqueur called Rozalin. After baking in ramekins the dessert is covered in a sweet caramel topping.

There are many excellent restaurants in Dubrovnik, but among those of note are Orsan which overlooks the marina in the Old Town, Taverna Otto at Gruž port and Restaurant 360°, one of the city's most fashionable dining places.
