Passport/visa requirements: Your passport must be valid for the proposed duration of your stay in Mexico. You’ll need to complete an immigration form and have this with you when you both enter and leave the country.

Packing essentials: Mexico experiences hot weather all year round, with the rainy season in the holiday hotspots around Cancun and the Riviera Maya being between the months of September and October. With this in mind you should pack light clothing, sunglasses, a hat and plenty of sun cream. It’s also worth taking a rain jacket if you’re staying out of peak season.

Moving on to sauces and not many do it better. Salsa (Spanish for sauce) is a tomato, coriander and onion mix with variable levels of chillies added to alter the heat. It again can be used as a main ingredient or simply an addition to any corn-based dishes.

The same goes for guacamole which mainly consists of smashed avocado, coriander and onion… again with chillies determining the heat. It is a cherished dish which came about in the Aztec period. Nowadays it is used worldwide as a dip or a popular choice with breakfasts and salads.

Dia de Muertos - Day of the Dead

Dia de Muertos is a traditional celebration of the lives that have left us. It usually takes place on November 1st and 2nd, with the 1st (Dia de los Inocentes) being a chance to remember infants and children, whilst November 2nd (Dia de los Muertos) is acknowledging the lives of adults that have passed.

Almost everyone dresses up in scary costumes and face paint, which makes Day of the Dead one of the greater spectacles worldwide.

Nowhere does celebrations better than the capital of Mexico City, however, where a huge carnival is now held. This only originated after the success of the 2015 James Bond film, Spectre, which featured a Day of the Dead parade.

Son Jarocho Music Festival

Every year, around early February time, thousands of Mexicans (and holidaymakers) head for the UNESCO Heritage Site of Tlacotalpan, Veracruz to celebrate Candelaria (Candlemas). Candlemas is a religious celebration which sees an image of the Virgin floated down the river. Another huge reason for the number of spectators is to enjoy three-days of traditional music.

Mexican Independence Day

September 16 marks the day that Mexico gained independence.

Celebrations include singing, dancing and partying hard. You’ll find age old chants and fireworks are another big part of this special day.
