Food & Drink

There’s no shortage of culinary delights in St Thomas to tantalise your taste buds. Fungi is a staple comfort food on the island which is like a Caribbean-style polenta, made from ground cornmeal and often served with fish, onions, tomatoes and okra. Bull foot soup is a hearty broth featuring a cow's heel and a variety of vegetables and spices, while conch, a large sea snail which is a seafood favourite on the island, is prepared in many forms including fritters, chowders and sauces.

Johnny cakes are rounds of fried bread, often served with a fried chicken leg and rice and roti is a tortilla-type flat bread which is usually filled with meat, seafood or vegetables. Upside down Caribbean coconut rum cake is a tasty offering you'll find across the island.

The Bushwacker is a fabulous creamy chocolate cocktail invented in St Thomas in 1975 which features Kahlua, Amaretto, coco, Grand Marnier, Baileys and vodka.

Best Time

All-year-round sunshine makes St Thomas great to visit at any month, but April to June is a great time to discover the island's delights if you want to avoid large crowds and benefit from lower travel costs. The mercury rises to around 32? in the height of summer in July and August, while it drops to an average minimum of 24? in the winter months from December to mid-March.
January is the coldest month in St Thomas, with an average low of 20°F. The months with the lowest chance of rain are February and March, while November is the month when you are most likely to experience rain. Wind is generally moderate on the island, with July being the windiest month. The hurricane season officially begins on June 1 and runs through to November.
