It also boasts plenty of pulsating nightlife, with lively bars and dynamic nightclubs where you can dance from dusk till dawn, plus you can enjoy some retail therapy in everything from colourful straw markets to high-end shopping malls and designer boutiques.  
      

Food & Drink

Traditional cuisine in the Bahamas is steeped in intense flavour and diversity, making it capable of tantalising your taste buds and satisfying the most discerning palate. Conch, crab, fish, lobster, fresh fruit, pigeon peas, potatoes, pork and rice all feature heavily in many traditional dishes in the Bahamas. Boiled fish is a staple, which often comprises Bahamian grouper or snapper, accompanied by butter grits, which are made with boiled ground corn, or a Johnny cake, a cross between a dense bread and slightly sweet cake.

Souse is a classic Bahamian dish, which resembles a hearty stew comprising chicken pieces, oxtail, sheep's tongue or pig's feet, combined with a range of vegetables including bell peppers, celery, carrots and onions. Conch is a giant sea snail which forms the basis of many island meals, with conch fritters, conch chowder and cracked conch among the tasty offerings.

Bahamians are big on desserts and among the much-loved choices are guava duff, rum cake and bread pudding. The most popular traditional drink is rum punch, a blend of rum, grenadine syrup, nutmeg, plus pineapple, orange and lime juice. Other popular beverages include Kalik beer and Piña Colada.

Best Time

The Bahamas have a tropical maritime climate, with very hot and wet summers, and mild and dry winters. The hurricane season runs from June to November, although serious storms are very rare. Easterly trade winds contribute to tropical thunderstorms and the region experiences heavy downpours of rain. A great time to visit is between November and April when you'll enjoy plenty of sunshine, warm weather and much less rain than the summer months.
Temperatures average around 24°C at this time of year, which is ideal for soaking up the sun on the beach or taking to the sea for a swim or some thrilling water sports action. If you can tolerate the rain, the summer can also be very appealing, with temperatures in July and August averaging 28°C, with the mercury often rising into the low 30s. Sea temperatures in the Bahamas are great for swimming, snorkelling and diving all year round. The warmest water temperature is in August, with an average of around 30.2°C, while the coldest month is January, with an average water temperature of 23.3°C.      

Things To See and Do

This sun-soaked destination is a dream come true for couples, families and groups of friends, with an abundance of wonderful things to see and do. The Bahamas are a diver’s paradise, with many great underwater sites to explore, including Sugar Wreck, Pig Beach and King Kong’s Blue Hole. You’ll observe many species of shark, plus other captivating creatures including turtles, moray eels, stingrays and dolphins. Key attractions waiting to be discovered include Clifton Heritage National Park, Paradise Lagoon, Glass Window Bridge, Andros Barrier Reef and The Cloisters. The capital city of Nassau boasts a plethora of attractions including the Pirates of Nassau museum, Nassau Straw Market, St. Francis Xavier Cathedral and Queen’s Staircase, an imposing walkway of 66 steps carved out of solid limestone rock by 600 slaves in the 1700s. The city is also home to several captivating forts including Fort Fincastle, Fort Montagu and Fort Charlotte.
  Fabulous family attractions include Ardastra Gardens & Wildlife Conservation Centre and Marine Habitat at Atlantis and Aquaventure, a superb waterpark with an array of slides and a lazy river.
