Food & Drink

 Malaysia's unofficial national dish is Nasi lemak, which is basically rice cooked in coconut milk which can have many accompaniments including prawn sambal, boiled egg, vegetables, peanuts, cucumber slices and fried anchovies. Laska is a spicy noodle soup which is often made with fish or prawns, while Martabak is a pan-fried bread which is stuffed with minced meat and onions, then dipped in spicy sauce. Char Kway Teow is a delicious rice noodles dish stirred in pork fat and Nasi Kandar is a scrumptious offering consisting of rice which is topped with meat and vegetables, coated in a thick, spicy sauce.

  Kuih Bahulu are simple but tasty little sponge cakes made with flour, sugar, eggs and baking powder, while Bubur Cha Cha is a fabulous dessert made with coconut milk, sago, bananas, yams, sweet potatoes, pandan leaves and black-eyed peas. Teh Tarik (pulled tea) is The national drink of Malaysia and Air Cincau is a much-loved beverage which can be served hot or cold consisting of chunks of grass jelly, soaked in milk or fresh syrup, with a little extra sugar added.

Best Time

Malaysia has a classic equatorial climate which means it enjoys tropical weather all year round, but is often quite humid due to its proximity to water. Temperatures are rarely uncomfortably hot, ranging from around 20°C to 30°C average throughout the year.
 A great time to visit West Malaysia if you want to reduce the risk of a tropical downpour is during its dry season from December to April, while the dryer period in East Malaysia is from April to October. Temperatures at sea level range from around 21°C to 32°C, while temperatures are significantly cooler at higher elevations. Conditions for a beach holiday are suitable throughout the year in Malaysia. Temperatures hover around 28°C during the summer season in the capital Kuala Lumpur from March to September. If you want to get out and about on foot in the city when temperatures are a bit cooler, but still humid, then April and May is a good time to visit.
