Food & Drink

You won't struggle to find gastronomic delights to tantalise your taste buds in beautiful Sri Lanka. The people of this wonderful land love spicy food that is bursting with flavours and aromas.

A key feature of Sri Lankan cuisine is boiled or steamed rice, served with a curry of meat or fish or fresh vegetables. Traditional dishes are often accompanied by pickled fruits or vegetables, sambols and chutneys, while coconut is a major ingredient in many flavoursome concoctions. Fish curry and mixed rice is a big favourite, and Sri Lanka dhal curry (Parippu) is a much-loved staple dish across the island. A fabulous Sri Lankan street food dish is known as kottu roti which features shredded pieces of godamba roti that is stir fried with an assortment of spices and various meaty or vegetarian ingredients. Other popular local dishes include beetroot curry, young jackfruit curry and pennywort salad.

Avocado crazy is a popular Sri Lankan dessert made with ripe avocados, sugar, cream, and rum, Bibikkan is a traditional coconut cake and Aasmi is a delicious deep-fried sweet snack which is often served on special occasions. Sri Lankan tea is regarded by many as among the best in the world, while Arrack is a potent liquor made from the sap of palm trees. Fresh coconut water is served directly from the shell all over the country and Lion is Sri Lanka's national beer.

Best Time

Sri Lanka's equatorial location means there's very little fluctuation in temperatures throughout the year. This makes it a great place to visit all year round, with pleasantly warm weather There is, however, a distinct variation in the amount of rainfall you'll experience, with the country being subjected to two monsoons, the Yala and the Maha. The Yala brings rainfall to the south west from the end of April to September, with wettest months being May and June, while the Maha is less severe but affects the east coast from November to March, with the wettest months being November and December.
 An excellent time to enjoy some fun on the beach is during the high season in December to April. This is also anideal time to visit the big parks to marvel at the elephants, leopards and other animals. The hottest months in Sri Lanka are April and May, with average high temperatures in the 32.2°C  to 35°C range. The shoulder seasons of September to October and April also enjoy wonderful weather when you can avoid the crowds and often book a cruise for a lower price.
