Travellers have visited since ancient times to enjoy the health benefits of the mineral-rich waters and mud, which is believed to relieve a number of skin ailments.

What Are The Must-See Attractions?

It’s no surprise the ancient rose-hued city of Petra is the country’s most popular tourist attraction. Built in 300 BC by the Nabataeans, this archaeological marvel is one of the new Seven Wonders of the World and boasts temples, tombs and caves carved into the pink sandstone cliffs. Highlights include Colonnaded Street, the Treasury, the Royal Tombs and Qasr al-Bint temple. Wadi Rum, known as the ‘valley of the moon’, is a mesmerising UNESCO World Heritage Site in the far south of Jordan featuring deep canyons, towering sandstone outcrops and rocky caverns with prehistoric inscriptions and carvings. The vast Dana Biosphere Reserve, which is home to ancient copper mines and agricultural villages, is the place to discover the greatest concentration of wildlife in Jordan, including the elusive ibex. Other must-see attractions include Wadi Mujib river canyon, Ajloun Forest Reserve, Qasr Al-Harranah dessert castle, Azraq Wetlands and Mount Nebo.

What Do I Need to Take?

There are several essential items you should pack for a holiday in Jordan. Light clothing and footwear is vital during the very hot summer months, from May to September, with a light jacket for cooler evenings. You’ll also need swimwear for your hotel pool or visits to the Dead Sea. Walking shoes or trainers are ideal for getting around the cities, hiking boots are needed for outdoor trekking and sports sandals or water shoes are perfect for visits to the valleys and ravines. Sunglasses, lip balm, a water bottle and plenty of sun cream are also essential, while a brimmed sun hat is also highly recommended. The winter months of November to March are typically cold and wet, so a heavier jacket, sweater and scarf is advisable. Other items to consider packing include insect repellent, hand sanitiser, tote bag, a compact first aid kit, deodorant wipes and travel adaptors.

Best Time To Visit

The weather in Jordan is generally warm and sunny with a Mediterranean climate in the west and desert climate in the east and south. Summers are long, dry and hot, while winters are short, wet and cool. The spring months of March to May, or autumn months of September to November, are very appealing when the weather is more moderate, with the mercury reaching into the high twenties, making conditions ideal for exploring Jordan’s incredible natural attractions. The heat in the summer months can make it very challenging to travel around, with temperatures rising into the forties, so this time of year is more suited to a relaxing holiday, soaking up the sun on the beach or enjoying water sports action. Nights in Jordan can get very cold in the winter months when most of the rainfall occurs, mainly falling as short and intense downpours.
