Bask in the beauty of the Sun Siyam Iru Fushi

We’ve been following our travel specialist Poppy on her trip to the Maldives and it’s time for her final stop! To round off the holiday, she spent two nights at the 5-star Sun Siyam Iru Fushi and has shared her experience with us…

After a short seaplane flight from Male, I arrived at Sun Siyam Iru Fushi to a wonderful (and musical) welcome and was escorted to check in by one of the friendly butlers. I was staying in a Deluxe Beach Villa with Pool and the room was amazingly spacious.

With a private pool, huge outdoor bathroom complete with a luxurious i-spa bathtub and a personal cabana, the extra touches made it a really personal experience that would be well suited for couples looking for peace and quiet.

On the whole, the luxury island is much larger than their sister resort, Sun Aqua Vilu Reef, but still manages to maintain an authentic Maldivan feel. They have 14 food and drink outlets, including Bamboo Restaurant where I ate an absolutely delicious Vietnamese-inspired lunch and Sinbad, a new Arabic-themed pool bar and restaurant.

After lunch, I was taken on a tour of the facilities which included a sneak peek into the ultra-luxurious ‘Celebrity Retreat’ for VIP’s. Sleeping up to 10 people, the two-story retreat is ideal if you’re looking for maximum privacy as it includes a 24/7 private butler, in-villa breakfast and many other luxurious extras to add a special touch to your stay. I, however, couldn’t stop there for long, because I was on my way to the resort’s award-winning spa.

The Spa by Thalgo has been voted the best in the Maldives and after my relaxing treatment, I could understand why. Each of the 20 treatment rooms are named after a flower and then fragranced to match, which creates a really personal, unique experience. The treatments aren’t part of the all-inclusive package, but they are definitely worth splashing out on.

After freshening up at my beautiful villa, I enjoyed dinner at the Islander’s Grill, a Maldivan grill specialising in seafood that you can use as part of the all-inclusive option. The great thing about the Sun Siyam Iru Fushi is that almost every restaurant has a vegetarian menu with plenty of choice. After dinner it was time to relax, and with the main bar sitting beside the water’s edge, it’s the perfect place to unwind with a cocktail in hand.

The following morning, it was an early start with breakfast at Sinbad before the morning snorkelling safari excursion. This allowed me to discover some of the amazing underwater flora and fauna further out from the island, before checking out the house reef. While it was smaller than the incredible reef at the sister resort, I still saw some wonderful marine life, including clownfish (hi Nemo!), as well as having a turtle swim right past me.

All that swimming built up an appetite, so I decided to check out the Fluid Bar for lunch. Located right next to the family pool, the snacks and light dining options here are varied enough for children of all ages to enjoy. Then, it was time to spend the afternoon relaxing on the dazzlingly white beaches and I have to say that these were the most beautiful I’ve seen in the Maldives so far. If you’re more of an activity lover, then there are some fantastic water sports and activities to enjoy across the resort, including paddle boarding, windsurfing and canoeing.

It was a struggle to tear myself away from the paradise shores, but it was time to change before dinner at Flavours, a French restaurant overlooking the ocean. While we were enjoying a pre-dinner drink, we watched the nightly fish feeding, where a whole family of reef sharks swam up for food – a wonderful and unique experience. The cuisine we enjoyed was also a delight, with a large menu to choose from if you’re staying all-inclusive, as well as an a la carte option.

With the evening drawing to a close, it was hard to believe that this was my last evening in the Maldives, but it was great to round off the trip at Sun Siyam Iru Fushi. The 5-star island resort had so many fabulous dining options and facilities that it would make a great choice for both families and adults.
