Safety and Security Tips for Stress-Free Travel

Are you looking forward to your next holiday? From packing your suitcases to booking activities, the pre-holiday build up can be incredibly exciting. However, it’s important not to forget about the security essentials to keep you and your valuables safe along the way.

So, without further ado, allow us to introduce a few simple tips that will help you to have a stress-free holiday.

Stay mobile savvy

From free Wi-Fi to impressive camera facilities, our smartphones are travel essentials. However, have you ever considered the security risks of using open networks, particularly for handling sensitive information? Even password protected hotel and restaurant Wi-Fi can be a risk so rather than sending a stream of personal data where any skilled hacker can access your information, we recommend using your 3G network for anything related to online banking or shopping. EU citizens can currently use their at-home data allowance in a large number of European countries, but if you’re heading further afield, grabbing a local SIM card could be a great alternative.

Holiday

We’d also recommend switching off location services where possible to avoid drawing attention to your absence – particularly if you’re a homeowner. However, one feature we would recommend keeping switched on is ‘Find my Phone’, which can track your mobile if it is lost or stolen! Avid social media users with public profiles will have a huge amount of their personal information available online so it’s important to stay aware of who could use this to their advantage. Updating your device with the latest software is also crucial as patches can fix security issues or bugs that could be exploited.

Keep your valuables safe

Once upon a time, jetting off abroad was an excuse to leave your home behind but now that our tablets, mobiles and social media accounts have become a huge part of many of our lives, it feels almost impossible to leave our gadgets alone. But while you can still capture each moment of your travels, it’s crucial to stay alert and keep your valuables safe.

The majority of these tips are common sense and if you follow the usual precautions that you would take at home, you should be completely fine. However, if you’re visiting a particularly busy area, it’s worth taking just a few extra steps to ensure you don’t end up in a sticky situation.

Holiday

Almost every good quality hotel room will have a safe so, if you don’t need to carry everything around, you can leave your passport, some of your travel money or an emergency bank card here to keep them safe while you’re out and about. Splitting your money between a few different hiding places is also a great idea. This way, if you’re unfortunate enough to lose your bag or wallet, it won’t wipe out the rest of your holiday spending money!

If you’re particularly worried about theft, it’s always better to take extra care. We recommend taking a zip up bag (cross body straps are great) and from invisible security pouches to money belts, there are a huge selection of options that go one step further.

Finally, simply stay aware of your surroundings. If you wouldn’t place your bag at the side of your chair at home, don’t do it on holiday! Keep it underneath the table or between your feet and you’ll minimise the chances of forgetting to pick it up or having it go walkabout.

Keep yourself healthy

The last thing you want during your precious time away is to get ill! Luckily, there are a couple of precautions you can take that will help you to stay fit and healthy throughout your holiday.

A few months before you travel, check with your doctor in case there are any injections you need to visit a specific destination. This will help protect you against diseases that may not be present in the UK but do cause problems elsewhere. Aside from this, simple precautions like packing a basic first aid kit filled with plasters, painkillers and hand sanitiser always comes in handy!

If you’re planning to eat street food or indulge in a couple of cocktails, check out the situation with drinking water (ice in drinks can be an unexpected cause of stomach bugs) and only eat dishes that appear completely cooked through. A good rule of thumb is to find restaurants that are popular with locals, for both an authentic food experience AND a meal that won’t leave your stomach feeling worse for wear afterwards.

Travel insurance is your friend

Here at Destination2, we always recommend purchasing a comprehensive travel insurance policy before each trip. These start from just a couple of pounds and can be a lifesaver in case of any emergencies. If you’re a frequent traveller, you can even enjoy savings with an annual policy that covers multiple holidays!

Some things to look out for on travel insurance include a low excess, high limits on individual items (e.g. valuables, cash or your passport), a 24-hour assistance line and extreme activity cover if you enjoy getting the adrenaline pumping on your holidays. If you find yourself falling ill or stuck in the airport after a cancelled flight, your travel insurance policy could save you from a hefty bill so we think it’s definitely worth investing in for every trip you take!

Now that you’re all set up for a safe and secure holiday, the only thing left to do is have an utterly fabulous time! Not booked yet? Call our Travel Experts on 01244 957 714 to discover your perfect getaway.
