Your Essential Barbados Holiday Packing Guide

Ahh, Barbados. This charming island is one of the most beautiful places in the world, with many couples, honeymooners and families returning year after year to get their Caribbean fix.

If you’re lucky enough to be planning a holiday or honeymoon to this jewel of the West Indies, be sure to read this handy packing guide to ensure you've got everything you need for the ultimate Caribbean getaway.

What to wear

Due to its location in the tropics, Barbados enjoys warm to hot temperatures throughout the year - so you can leave your big coat at home! If you’re travelling to the island during the rainy season, pack a light mac, just in case you find yourself caught in a tropical monsoon. Showers aside, Barbados has around 3,000 hours of sunshine each year, and more beaches than you can shake a Pina Colada at - so best to take multiple changes of swimwear with you to wear on beach days.

Please remember that, although Barbados is a chilled-out island, beachwear really should remain on the beach or in beach bars and resorts. If you’re planning to explore the island during your holiday (and we recommend you do!), pack some shorts and t-shirts. A comfortable pair of sandals are a great alternative to your flip-flops, and will be easier on your feet if you fancy going off on an adventure!

Barbados has a wide variety of fabulous restaurants, serving delicious dishes. Some of these eateries do have a dress code, so best pack some smart trousers or skirts, as well as a light jacket for the evenings. It’s also worth remembering that shorts generally aren’t acceptable attire for dinner. Many restaurants prefer men to wear a shirt, rather than just a t-shirt or vest. The best type for the weather is a cotton, short-sleeved shirt.

Please remember: it’s against the law in Barbados to wear camouflage clothing or carry anything made from camouflage material.

Additional items to pack

Well that’s clothing sorted, but what about all the other items you should take with you to Barbados? Well, due to Barbados holidays being laid-back affairs, you should be able to pack lightly - here are some items that we recommend taking with you.

Due to the climate in Barbados, sunscreen and sunglasses are a must. Be sure to pack at least factor 30 sunscreen - sunburn has been known to ruin holidays! Sunglasses aren’t just there to look cool, they’re also to protect your eyes from the sun’s harmful UV rays, so be sure to buy a pair that meet the European Safety Standards.

Whilst we’re on the subject of the sun, be sure to pack a sunhat or baseball cap to avoid sunstroke. It’s also worth taking some insect repellent to renounce those pesky insects that can come out in the evenings.

Most of the resorts in Barbados provide guests with necessities like shampoo, conditioner and shower gel, so there’s no need to pack these items. If you’re planning to bring liquids with you, remember that only 100 ml or less can be taken in your hand luggage, if they’re stored in a clear container. If you’re taking medications with you, you’ll need a note from your doctor.

Foolproof packing tips

Here are some foolproof packing tips, to ensure you’re able to maximise the space left in your suitcase:

  • In the week before you start packing, compile a list of everything you need. Split your list into two sections: necessity and desirable.
  • Roll your clothes instead of folding them. They’ll take up less space this way, and you won’t have to worry about deep creases when you unpack.
  • If you’re taking a rolling suitcase, pack the heaviest items closest to the wheels to make it easier to pull.
  • If you’re struggling to fit in smaller items, like socks, bunch them into shoes.
