Thailand or Vietnam - which would YOU choose?

Thailand

If you’re planning on a trip to Southeast Asia soon, there is a whole host of countries to choose from. From the street food to the beaches, the warmth of the people to jaw dropping scenery, we look at two of our favourites - Thailand and Vietnam - and see which comes out on top!

Distance

Flying from the UK to Bangkok takes around 11 hours, and to Vietnam it takes about 12 hours. Both journeys usually involve a change, which we recommend taking advantage of. Break your journey up by stopping off at an airport hotel for the night. This gives you some quality sleep to ease the tail end of your journey! Direct flights for both destinations are available, but only from London Heathrow and Gatwick.

Both – what’s an extra hour when you’re flying long haul?

Beaches

While both countries have incredible coastlines, if you want postcard-perfect beaches, head to Thailand. The different Thai islands allow the traveller to experience the full range – from party beaches, to deserted beaches, to conservation areas, to luxury resort beaches.

Vietnam does have some wonderful beaches, however. Nha Trang, Phu Quoc and Mui Ne are must-visit places, but Thailand has more variety and its beaches are just that little bit more spectacular.

Experience

One of the most exciting things about Southeast Asia is experiencing the different cultures, landscapes, foods and people. While both countries have very different personalities, Thailand feels more laidback, calmer and provides the traveller with more creature comforts. However, Vietnam is famed for its true authentic experience – day-to-day living is a riotous, thrilling mix of adventure, culinary marvels and inspirational people.

Family-friendly?

Both countries are brilliant holiday choices for families with children. There is an array of resorts, days out and things to do with kids in Thailand and Vietnam. From water puppet theatre in Hanoi to waterparks in Koh Samui – these countries will make a massive impression on young minds.

When it comes down to picking one particular country, we choose Thailand. An overwhelming choice of activities, facilities and things to see and do for the whole family is something that this country excels in. Plus, the Thai people adore young children, so eating at restaurants, getting out and about and keeping them entertained is a breeze.

Climate

Both Thailand and Vietnam experience a tropical climate, with an average of 28C throughout the year. Thailand has three defined seasons. Between March and May, the weather is hot and dry, from June to October sees a rainy season and there is a cool season between November and February.

The length of Vietnam means different regions experience different climates throughout the year. In the north, the hot season is from May to October, while November to April is cooler with less rain. South Vietnam is dry and hot from November to April, with the heat and rainfall hitting between May and October.

Our choice: For warm weather throughout the year, Vietnam pips its neighbour to the post

Vietnam

For couples

Both destinations are stunningly beautiful countries. From the verdant Mekong Delta and Son Tra Peninsula, in Vietnam, to the island of Koh Lipe and Railay, near Krabi, in Thailand, they both make wonderful holiday locations for couples.

For adventure, Vietnam is a perfect country to explore, however, if you’re looking for romance and luxury, Thailand has the edge. With a range of islands, settings, hotels and resorts, the Land of Smiles will create unforgettable memories for the both of you.
