Weather in Corfu


Corfu is blessed with warm weather all year round, offering hot summers and mild winters, with an average of more than 3,000 hours of sunshine. This means that the best time to visit depends on your holiday plans.

The hottest weather can be experienced during the summer months of June to August, with temperatures averaging from the high 20s to the low 30s. Even then it is not unknown for the mercury to rise to around 40°C.

If you prefer your holidays to be a little cooler, visiting Corfu in the spring or autumn months - from April to May and September to October – might be a more preferable, with temperatures ranging from around 18°C to the mid-20s.

The coldest time to visit Corfu is between the winter months of November to March. During this time temperatures are unlikely to drop below the mid-teens, but this is also the rain season with the possible chance of a shower during your holiday. Despite this, these month provide a great time to immerse yourself in the island’s culture and enjoy the picturesque scenery on offer.

Beach Holidays in Corfu

The long sandy expanses in the north of the island are very popular with families while revellers who like to party are drawn to some of the coastal locations in the south with their lively beach bars and nightclubs. These include Kavos Beach.

Corfu has the enviable reputation of being one of the greenest Greek islands which means its superb beaches are complemented by lush surrounding landscapes.

Paleokastritsa is the most famous beach resort in the north west of the island with its golden sands, crystal-clear waters and quaint harbours. There are several lovely beaches here which are set against a backdrop of gorgeous olive tree forests. The waters here are perfect for swimming and water sports.

Glyfada Beach is a popular choice for families and there's plenty of water sport going on, plus there are some lovely tavernas nearby for a tasty meal and refreshing drink.

Issos Beach which is south of Corfu Town is a beautiful beach surrounded by amazing wildlife and rolling sand dunes. This beach doesn't get busy like many others on the island and is a great choice for couples who want to enjoy romantic strolls and magical sunsets.

Halikounas Beach is another quiet option where you can escape the crowds. This tranquil little gem near Lake Korission lets you immerse yourself in the beauty of Corfu and offers delightful views of the ancient monastery at the hilltop village of Agios Matheos.

The beach at Agios Gordios is one of the most popular on the island. Golden sands are surrounded by large rock formations, plenty of greenery and a host of excellent facilities including pedalos and canoes for hire. There's also a private area for 'au naturale' sunbathing.

Corfu has dozens of stunning beaches, buts among the others worth a mention are Sidari Canal d'Amour beach, a picturesque cove on the north of Corfu, pebbled Kalami Beach with its clear waters and wonderful nearby fish tavernas and family-friendly Dassia Beach with its cosmopolitan atmosphere, excellent facilities and luxury hotel complexes.


Events and Festivals in Corfu


There are plenty of annual celebrations, religious festivals and major events in Corfu which you may be lucky enough to see during your visit to the island.

Corfu Carnival

This huge event held in Corfu Town in February or March has its roots in the Middle Ages during the period of Venetian occupation of Corfu. It involves plenty of dressing up, music, dance, colourful floats and a massive parade in Liston and Spianada square. This is followed by the symbolic burning of King Carnival.

Varkarola

The Varkarola is an exciting event held in August where choirs in boats sing traditional songs (cantades) and a giant bonfire display lights up the Corfu skies.

The Dance of the Priests

This takes place on Shrovetide Sunday in St. Basil square in the village of Episkepsis. The village priest starts the dance and he is joined by all the other men and later the women who perform a local dance called Corfiot. This custom is believed to date back to 500BC.

Cricket Festival

This is a popular annual event which emerged from the British domination of the Ionian islands. The festival is held each year in the giant cricket ground in Espianada Square in Corfu Town.

What to eat in Corfu


This wonderful island really excels when it comes to delicious food, so you really should try some of the local delicacies during your stay.

The people of Corfu really love meat and you’ll discover many delicious meaty delights here including Souvlakia (meat sticks), Giouvetsi, which is lamb cooked in a pot with rice, and Stifado which features veal cooked with tomato sauce and onions.

Pastitsada is a casserole that consists of pasta with veal, beef or poultry. This is cooked with chili peppers, onions, garlic, wine, olive oil, vinegar, cinnamon, cloves, tomatoes, black pepper and grated kefalotyri or parmesan cheese.

Seafood dishes, made with freshly-caught fish, are also very popular. These include Bourdeto, a fish soup in a spicy sauce made with onions, red pepper, olive oil and salt. Another great choice is Bianco which features various types of fish cooked in wine, garlic, lemon juice and vinegar.

Tsigareli is a vegetarian dish which features boiled leafy greens cooked with chopped onions, garlic, hot pepper and salt.

Popular island snacks include Tiropita which is puff pastry filled with Feta cheese, spinach, ham or minced meat. A scrumptious favourite is Sicomada, a cake made with dried figs, cinnamon, orange peel, almonds, wine and ouzo.

There are fantastic restaurants all over Corfu and among those of note are Toula’s at Agni Bay, The White House at Kalami Bay, Etrusco in Dassia and Taverna Tripa at Kinopiastes.
