Ranging from long family-friendly beaches with a plethora of activities on the sand and sea, to quiet and secluded bays and coves, the charming resort of Paphos has something for everyone.
Paphos has the longest coastline of any of the regions of Cyprus and boasts an impressive 27 beaches. The best family beach is at Coral Bay, a sandy horseshoe-shaped cove where you’ll find a myriad of water sports, leisure amenities and giant inflatables for children.
Lara Bay is more remote and secluded, making it an ideal location for couples wanting a romantic time strolling along the sands. It is also home to protected loggerhead and green turtles which nest there.
Another great sandy stretch at Paphos is Vrysoudia Beach. This has plenty of facilities and attractions including fish taverns, beach bars and shops.
Many holidaymakers head for Aphrodite’s Rock, a sea stack at Paphos. Legend says that the Greek goddess of love and beauty rose from the sea here. Folklore has it that swimming round the rock 3 times means you will be blessed with eternal beauty.
When you want a break from soaking up the rays on the sand, you can head into the city to explore some of its amazing historical landmarks, including incredible Roman and Byzantine ruins. Among those worth a visit are the Tomb of the Kings which is an ancient burial ground, House of Dionysus, Forty Columns Fortress and Agia Solomoni Catacombs.
There’s plenty to see and do in Paphos centre where you’ll discover a great selection of shops, boutiques, bars and restaurants. Local attractions for kids include Aphrodite Waterpark and Paphos Aquarium.
It’s also worth walking down to the resort’s delightful harbour with its iconic castle where you can take in the views and enjoy a meal and cocktails in one of the many restaurants and bars you’ll find there.
There are plenty of annual festivals and celebrations in Paphos. Here are a few of the most popular.
This is held in September in honour of Dionysus, the Greek God of theatre, wine and parties. The 3- day event features displays of local arts and crafts, wines and food, as well as traditional dancing, music and entertainment.
A colourful parade of flowers and floats is held in May from Poseidon Avenue to the old harbour at Kato Paphos.
This takes place to mark the beginning of Lent and involves a kite flying competition at the town's lighthouse. There's also plenty of singing and dancing.
This is staged in September to promote Paphos as a culturally rich city. A famous opera troupe is invited each year to perform at Paphos Medieval Castle Square.
You’ll discover plenty of wonderful restaurants, cafes and taverns in Paphos serving delicious traditional Cypriot food.
Cuisine in Paphos is heavily influenced by traditional Greek and Middle Eastern gastronomy.
A local favourite is Koupepia which is minced meat, rice, onions, tomatoes, and a mixture of herbs, all wrapped in fresh vine leaves.
Makaronia tou fournou is a hearty dish made with halloumi, sprinkled with dry mint, large pasta tubes, minced pork, tomatoes and béchamel sauce.
Another tasty choice is Cypriot-style souvlaki which consists of small chunks of charcoal-grilled meat skewers, with a healthy helping of fresh salad.
A scrumptious sweet treat is Loukoumades which are deep-fried dough balls, soaking in honey and coated generously with crushed nuts, sesame seeds and cinnamon.
Among the eating places of note in Paphos are St George’s Tavern in Coral Bay, Viklari Peyia Greek restaurant, Porto Bello Italian restaurant and Laona Restaurant in the old town.
